Almost perfect user interface....On-board charging dongle forces some compromises....
It's hard to keep up with the latest in flashlights, but Olight definitely is one of the leaders. With regards to the actual LED, the Cree XHP35 is the latest and greatest - it's not quite as powerful as the XHP50 or 70, but it is significantly more efficient (172 lumens per watt vs 149 on the XHP50). More importantly, the die is 3.5mm wide, vs 5mm on the XHP50 and XHP50.2, which gives a tighter beam since the light source is smaller. The 1500 lumen turbo mode is blinding - while the XHP50 and 70 lights can put out more total power, it doesn't make a lot of sense if the heat or battery limit you to 20 seconds at that power. That said, you won't stay at 1500 lumens for more than about 3 minutes on the M2R.Olight has a few innovations with the M2R. First, they have added a tailswitch. It's not a true clicky, but it allows you to instantly access the turbo mode as a blinker or as a light. Next, they have changed their on-board charging so you can use conventional batteries. The other Olight flashlights use a proprietary battery that adds a negative terminal next to the positive terminal - this also made them a real shorting hazard if you carried them without a case. The tailswitch still allows a stable tailstand. While the charging dongle is nice, it forces a couple of compromises. First, the tail magnet is quite weak. It will hold the flashlight vertically, but not sideways Next, the tailswitch is not as tactile as a traditional clicky as you would find on a Surefire or Nitecore, but it's a reasonable compromise to retain the magnetic tail charging capability. This thing could really use a grip ring. The pocket clip is the same double-sided clip from some of their other flashlights - it allows a deep carry bezel up or down. The user interface is the best part. Similar to other Olight offerings. Primarily through the side switch, one click goes on, then hold to cycle through power levels. Long hold for moonlight. Double click goes to highest power (but not turbo) Tailswitch gives you turbo, or a strobe if switched to tactical mode. Three clicks for strobe. One thing I noticed is that it doesn't seem to like the dongle from my Olight H2R Nova. The charge indicator stays red, even when the M2R charge indicator is green.A little less fancy is the more traditional Rofis KR20, which I compare in my video. Please check out the video for other details. Serious flashlight!
The best tactical flashlight I've owned! Took this thing on a camping trip this weekend. Convenient two button operation. Turbo mode is super bright and lights up a huge area. It's slim and the dual direction pocket clip is adjustable to whatever type of carry I prefer (pocket, backpack, belt holster, etc). I love that i can charge this thing with the included magnetic charging cable and it's compatible with my S1r Baton. Easy charging during road trips. I love that I dont have to carry a separate charging unit for this. This is now my prefered zombie apocalypse light.

Wanted to love this light.
I wanted to love this light. My Streamlight Stinger HL finally went out on me after five year. It it’s credit I’ve recently used it as a hammer and it wasn’t a fan. I was interested in carrying a smaller light on patrol and read good reviews on Olight. I worked one 12 hour shift and one 8 hour shift with this light. I work seconds so the majority of my time is in the dark. I am a K9 handler and I do a lot of car searches so I needed a light that would last a shift. This light made it through my first 12 hour shift without a hiccup. Light stayed bright all night and I was able to use the turbo mode at the end of my shift. I was pretty impressed. Put the light on the nifty magnetic charger and off to bed I went. Got the light for my next shift and first time hitting the tail switch the light was very faint as if the battery was dead. I used the side switch and same thing. Light was not nearly as bright as the previous night. I got better performance out of my old Ozark Trail light from Walmart for $9.00. Thinking maybe the light didn’t seat on the charger very well I made sure I seated it and let it charge. I just pulled the light off the charger and it still is as if it has a dead battery. Charger was green when removed. I wanted to like this light but I guess I’ll have to use my trusty Surefire back up light to get me through the weekend. Just wish CR123a batteries were cheaper.

Quality build, efficient XHP35 HD chip sips battery, but...
Great flashlight, quality build and feel, but the User Interface (UI) will be an issue for many.Pros:- Small profile for 18650 battery (5.25” x 1”)- Cree XHP35 chip goes easy on the battery- 6 Light levels (1500/1000, 700, 250, 60, 15, 1) *2 operating modes - 1500 lumens only available in Tactical mode- Available in neutral white (and more common cool white)- Charges without removing battery (included), but an external charger is not provided.- Tail button and side button with unique capabilities (for those who don’t use it daily, the UI (see details under con) makes it more of a gadget than a quick access tool) most will like it, some won’t.Cons:- price is a little high for an 18650 battery flashlight- User interface is confusing: 2 modes (standard and enhanced tactical) and two buttons.- Side button operates with short press to turn on, long press (lock, unlock, toggle through light levels, access 1 lumen), and multiple press (double press for brightest level in mode, triple press for strobe)- Only Tactile mode can access 1,500 lumen torch mode.- Tail button has press and deep press. On tactile press lights at 1,500 and deep press strobes- Very complicated UI, but when/if learned works well.- The light is not really a tactical light. The narrow diameter keeps it small, but the form factor isn’t made to hold with thumb on tail switchI like the light, and I really like the neutral white model. The neutral white color seems to bring out detail in distant objects. The cool white appears brighter, but it also washes out detail. This is one of those products that some will love and some not so much.
