Beautiful Creatures: The Manga

Beautiful Creatures
This is probably the most unusual manga I have ever read. I binged it because it was that good. Yes it was different but the kind that makes you want to peer around the next wall. This wasn't horror but it was some sort of dark magic. It was about spell casters and there is one who is a Natural which means lots of power if they go to the light or dark side.It is kind of the story of so many...good and evil/light and dark. But this one is slightly different in that there is a mortal boyfriend and they can see in the past together. He works with her until he gets stabbed. She must use the original spell that was cast that started this to bring him back. But when you ask for something something is taken away too. So is Lena light or dark? You decide!I absolutely loved this because it is so different from other manga. And I have read quite a few. This is just like something you will probably never read again. So take the plunge!10/10

Unexpectedly good
I had no idea about the plot when I started to read this. The cover was so attractive that I had to check this out. There's something about families with inherited magic that I find incredibly beautiful and alluring and this graphic novel delivered. I just wish we could have gotten more about the family's history, it felt a bit superficial and had a lot of potential for spookyness and mystery.

Not my cup of tea
Very derivative. Artwork is ok, but story is not immersive and generally insists upon itself. I've read better, but I've also read worse. It is ok for an afternoon when you have nothing else to do.

Wow!
This was my first ever manga style read. Loved it. It was a very quick read. Definitely going to look into this style. As I was reading it I could imagine that I was actually watching the movie version.

I love the character designs.
I thought I remembered this story halfway through, so I Googled. I caught part of the movie a long while back and was surprised. The story is good but I love these character designs.

Just Okay
Originally posted on GoodreadsThere were parts I loved and those I hated. So I split the difference.Given BC's publication date, I can't get on its case about riding the cliche PNR train. Some could argue it was a trailblazer where that's concerned because it certainly does fit the mould being used to death today. There's definitely a winning formula, if you can call it that: mortal & immortal fall in love; star-crossed lovers; super duper powers; small town setting; it's us against the world & everyone wants to tear us apart; immortal saves mortals life; they share a super special insta-bond. I could go on, but you get the point. Well, this novel has it all, the one major deviation to note is the POV. Congrats! It's a boy! Only, he doesn't sound terribly boyish. He sounds awfully girlish actually. That's right, Ethan Wate's voice is far too feminine to be believable. In addition, I question whether this novel needed to be so long. There's a lot of extraneous information that, IMO, doesn't add very much to the overall tone of the book. As a matter of fact, it detracts. Rambling narration takes much away from the meat of this story which, if trimmed, would have made for a much better read because even though Ethan's voice is a bit jarring, the story itself is interesting. I actually quite liked the idea of a cursed Caster family. It's has great promise and, aside from Ethan, I found several of the characters quite interesting.Where cliches are concerned this book takes the cake. It's chock full of southern cliches that simply don't ring true. I've spent quite some time in the south, specifically the area in which this book takes place, and while I find some of the cliches to be ring true, most don't and are used far too often. In addition, I simply couldn't get my head around the "accent" utilized in the dialogue. I get that the authors were trying to create an immersive, real experience but I found it distracting. With all the other arrows pointing the reader in a particular direction, this tactic seemed like overkill. What saved this book was its peripheral characters. Amma and Macon, in particular. I was looking forward to the times they would emerge on the page and I was eager to know more about them and what made them tick. I was also dying to know more about Ethan's dad and Sarafine. Sadly, these characters were, for the most part, overlooked.I checked out the books 2-4 from series from the library with the intention of reading them quickly, like I did the VA, Lux & Covenant series which I tore through in mere days. Unfortunately, it's taken me a week to get through the first book and I can't get myself to pick up the second. I guess that in itself says something. Usually I'm chomping at the bit to dive deeper into the story. This time, not so much.

Good read
This is the first manga I've read, and I love that it's graphic, too! Great story and a pretty quick read.

Genial
