Leah's Pony

This is just SUCH a great book! I have a hard time not crying when I read it aloud. Not only is it a wonderful story that builds empathy, it also teaches children about the Great Depression (and could be instrumental in talking about hard times in general). I learned something, too; I had never heard of a "penny auction" before this book. I've bought it for any and all kids in our family, in addition to our own. I think it's a book that should honestly be in any family's library.

I bought this book for my granddaughter Leah. She is currently too young for it but my daughter and I love the heart-warming story and can’t wait until she is old enough to read it to her. It is set in the 1930’s and shows the effect of the dust bowl on families. Leah’s sacrifice and resulting kindness of neighbors is a strong example of people supporting each other.

Great for horse-loving granddaughters!

I came across this book in a library at an elementary school where I was shelving books and had to take a look since it was about a pony. Then I had to buy my own copy plus one to send to my sister. The story is believable and the illustrations are great. There are facts that I didn't know about farm foreclosures in the Great Depression and how farmers worked together to keep what little they had. It is sort of a condensed version of "The Worst Hard Time" for children. Anyone interested in this period of American history would enjoy this book and children, I find, appreciate stories that are either true or based on real events.

One of the best books we have in our home schooling collections. Enjoyable, entertaining, and educational. Its well written, and worth every penny.

My kids & I loved this book when they were young. I could hardly read it to them w/out crying. A story of love & sacrifice that touched our hearts. And it has a happy ending!

This is an excellent book that I just recently purchased. My daughter had checked it out at her school library some years ago, and we both fell in love with it. Not only are the pictures beautifully-illustrated, but the story is about a little girl who has learned what truly matters in life, and gives sacrificially to that end. Highly recommended for any age.
