How do you put this back on after washing it?

What is the difference between the old version and new version?

It's not as firm and doesn't fill out as the photo depicts. I have the old version and had to replace it thanks to a new cat we got and was very disappointed. It's not worth what it costs.

Can this be packed back in the original box?

Yes. It arrived assembled (no assembly needed) in a sturdy, rectangular cardboard box (and the item wrapped in plastic inside the box). The item was not compressed in the box. I gift-wrapped the shipping box (after checking the time for damage) and it worked well.
