Grammar Girl Presents the Ultimate Writing Guide for Students (Quick & Dirty Tips)

Come for the Grammar, Stay for the Smarts
I am a high school English teacher, and I have listened to Grammar Girl podcast for the past several years. I picked up her Grammar Devotional a couple years ago and have used that with some success in my classroom. And to be honest, I picked up this Ultimate Writing Guide for Students because Amazon had a special one day and I thought I might find it useful in class as well (plus, with all the Grammar Girl does for us for free with her podcast and website, I figured I owed it to her to buy her books as well when I could).Unsurprisingly and yet surprisingly, I really enjoyed this book for my own personal reading. Unsurprising because I'm a big Grammar Girl fan - I really enjoy her writing style and the whimsy behind her words sometimes. Surprising because I figured I pretty much knew all of this, but I ended up getting a deeper understanding than I had before as well as some very helpful hints that I can use, not just in school with my students, but for my own writing as well.I think this is a fantastic book that anyone would benefit from reading. I was pleased to discover that some of the ways she explains things are the way I have been explaining them to students for the past several years (such as the two different ways to determine whether one needs a comma between coordinate adjectives). As the book moved on, however, I discovered that I was actually learning some things that I understood but could never really explain. Well, now I can. This book has an incredible amount of information, but Grammar Girl's smooth, friendly, folksy style makes it an easy and fun read. You're going to feel absolutely stuffed with knowledge and understanding, but it certainly does not read like a boring old grammar book.

Great Resource
I had this book as a textbook in one of my writing courses for my English undergraduate degree. It was a good resource but I felt it was better suited for high school and below. I also used this book while homeschooling my daughter through her high school years and she said it was one of her favorite books that we used in class. Fast forward a few years and now I am working toward my MA in Professional Writing. I misplaced this book so I bought a new copy for an Advanced Grammar course I enrolled in last semester. This book is great for the basics and covers many aspects of grammar in writing. It served as a wonderful refresher for many rules but did not cover many advanced concepts that I encountered in the course. I would definitely recommend this book especially for high school level and below as it is a great aid and resource. If you are looking for something more advanced, you may want to try elsewhere.

Very clear and interesting
I have to do a lot of writing and I'm afraid it is not my best thing to do. Failed at English and tend to write as I speak. This has helped me a lot and gives you quick tips to remember things. I purchase 3 books. I haven't read all of them yet, but if I need something I can pick up one of the books and get my answer. She write very clearly, makes it easy to understand. I love them. Thank you, Thank you. She covers most grammar.

Syntax & Semantics = comprehension!
Makes perfect sense, and I keep it in my classroom for a reference for my HS students; even though, you can get most of this information for free on the 'net, but I believe in giving her due.

Not just for students!
This is probably one of my favorite books of all time. I used to be an English teacher, and I would use this for reference when I wasn't 100% sure on a grammar rule. I also used it when I was an editor. Whenever someone asks for grammar help, I always recommend this book to them. Her website is great, of course, but this book is very handy to have around. It is easy to find whatever you need in it, and she speaks in plain English without talking down to her audience. I would give this 10 stars if I could!

Buy this if you can't recall or never knew when to use "that" instead of "which"!
In an easy to understand and even better, recall, fashion, Grammar Girl explains usage problems I've struggled with for many years. I haven't been a college kid for more than 40 years and use this as a handy reference. I can finally recall when to use "that" instead of "which"! And because no one other than Grammar Girl knows the rules governing commas, you need her Guide at hand whenever you write.

Handy, conversational for teens
This is an easy-to-access reference for anyone. It's conversational style may be great for teens.

Books blows
Book was required for a college course. What a joke. This book is for middle schoolers MAYBE. Awful book, awful author, vendor was fine.

This author is amazing.
Because of author Mignon Fogarty's simplified and no-nonsense writing style, her books are so helpful in easily locating the rules for writing, punctuation, etc. and provide easily-understood examples. I teach transcription and am constantly looking up the proper rules for punctuation and grammar. After literally years of Googling for her advice on the internet, I decided the best investment to make was to order the three books. So happy I did, as now everything is at my fingertips and any reference I ever need is available to me in this convenient form. The author makes this rather boring, difficult subject interesting and fun.

Recommended for AS Level English Language
I bought this book for myself, to help me prepare to teach AS Level English Language, because it covers most of the grammar you need to know for this exam. However, it's written in such an accessible way that I have used it with my students and have recommended they buy it. There is a daily post on Facebook by Grammar Girl which is also extremely useful, for those who want to learn more.

A Great Book
I don't think books written by anyone who claims "I merely find language fun and can't seem to restrain myself from sharing my weekly discoveries (I cited this from her "foreword" in Common Errors in English Usage by Paul Brians )" cannot go wrong. This is THE "funnest" Grammar book I have ever read. Her elaborate and lively explanation of Grammar using examples colored by her imaginary characters, Squiggly and Aardvark also makes me turn the pages. I am a Japanese teacher of English and I am using her attitude toward English and students and it is really working!Podcast教育大賞を獲得したFogarty先生の学生向けの文法の本。日本人の学生が必要な事項とこの本にかかれている事項はあまり重なりませんが、Grammarに対する態度は見習うべき部分が多く、日本の先生もその点を学べるのでは何て思ったりします。私は「面白い本」として楽しみました。文体も素晴らしいです!

More than i expected
I was expecting an average 1-2 year old book, something around 7/10 condition. I literally received a brand new book 9.5/10 condition, holly ! I am more than happy ! Thanks so much for the service !
