We have been using Skye the Watchdog for months with great success! The quality and level of detail with this sleep "toy" is outstanding and way above any other sleep light/toy/book or idea I could come up with. The service provided by Volcano LLC really sets the bar high for other toy companies. The instructions for use were easy to understand and everything worked as stated, we could really tell that they take great pride in their product. It was a very refreshing change from mass produced, thoughtlessly shipped and the poor instructions we have become accustomed to from the toy industry. We are using this with our 5 year old daughter, I was concerned that they may be too old for the comfort of this toy - boy was I wrong! She has embraced it completely and many nights looks forward to bedtime so she can snuggle with Skye. Really powerful - she has not slept alone in 5 years..........I can't say enough positive about this great sleep aid!!!!Pros:Night lights are bright enough to offer comfort but not so bright to fully wake up childNice "magical" sound when star lights light up. 22 July Update: We finally had a good few weeks with Skye. My 3 year daughter absolutely loves her Watchdog. She likes to say Skye's phrases at the same time, which I believe shows she is self-regulating. She now associates anyone with a cape as a super hero; in fact, she also likes to wear a blanket around her back, pretending to be just like Skye. I have the greatest respect for Geoff and his company. We have exchanged numerous emails regarding a little hiccup we had with the missing third star. He was also very open and gracious about receiving customer feedback/suggestions. If you're unsure about this product, I would not hesitate to ask Geoff. I am sure he will more than happy to answer your questions.**************************************8 July Update: I changed the review to 4 stars (instead of 3) because of Geoff's willingness to make things right for his customers. I suggested allowing parents to have on/off switches and/or volume control. My concern is my daughter accidentally pressing a paw in the middle of night, potentially waking her up. I also suggested to have brightness options for the stars (as they do not light up very well; they just glow yellow).**************************************We have yet to implement this with our 3 year old, so I will update my review afterwards. I am giving three stars for now because I did not receive the free third star. Also, the audio on the dog and the stars is a bit too loud for a nighttime product. I need to cover the star speakers with tape to muffle the volume.

We love our Starshine Watchdog! It was a panic purchase because I suddenly was in the throes of a few inexplicable weeks where my daughter (2.5) was screaming for two hours every bedtime. She's never had a lovey or been into hugging stuffed toys, but I knew she would like the star lights and book--and so it was. The bedtime tantrums did not immediately end, but the watchdog definitely made things easier and the screaming abated over time. She's never used her dog in the middle of the night, but she loves pressing the feet for a while right after lights out and never wants to go to bed without her doggy. We have had an issue where the start lights were out of sync for a few days. She'd press the foot one time, and one star would light up but not the other. Then she'd press again, and the other would light. This hasn't happened anymore, though, for a week or more. I'm glad she's never pressed the feet during the night because the talking voice is so loud, I feel it would be jarring. I put tape over the star light speakers, so that sound is a bit softer (I thought the stars would be silent). And I was hoping the battery unit inside the dog would also be where the speaker was so I could put tape there, too. But I discovered the voice unit is inaccessible in the stuffing--bummer. Also, just a personal preference, so not suggesting some big change for this tiny company, but I had originally selected the blue dog for my daughter but cancelled that when I thought about the fact that it would probably have a boy voice. I wanted the girl voice for her but did not want the pink dog (I got the pink dog, anyway). If there had to be just one color for a girl dog and one for a boy dog, I would have liked non-stereotypical ones, like maybe green and orange or maybe actual dog colors like a gray and a brown, e.g. It would also be cool if the book(s) had racial diversity in the human characters (this is more important, imo, than a non-pink girl dog). Things are getting a little better now regarding diversity, but it's still tough to find racial mirrors for my daughter--especially in books on non-race-related topics like sleep and potty training. Anyway, thanks to the folks who had the Starshine Watchdog idea and turned it into a great product. We are happy. (And thanks to them for the attention to detail and all the extras. We liked the coloring pages, and I really appreciated the tiny screwdriver and batteries.) FYI, the watchdog team / staff are very accessible and responsive. Great customer service.

After reading all of the positive feedback on this product, I bought it for my 3 year old daughter with fingers crossed tightly. I literally PRAYED that this would keep her in bed throughout the night. It didn’t though. It helped her become more excited to GO to bed, but it was not enough to keep her in bed when she would wake after midnight. I wish there were more star lights (maybe 3 or 4) along with a constant nightlight feature on the dog itself. Also, the book is super tiny and hard to read when the lights are dim.
