To mark the 90th birthday of the eminent conductor Bernard Haitink, this representative portrait is being released by BR-KLASSIK. These exceptional live recordings document the long-standing and intensive collaboration between the Dutch conductor, the Bavarian Radio Chorus and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. For six decades now, ever since he first conducted a Munich subscription concert in 1958, Bernard Haitink has repeatedly conducted the city's orchestras - sometimes in the Herkulessaal of the Residenz, sometimes in the Philharmonie i'm Gasteig. The orchestras' musicians and singers are just as happy to work with him as the Bayerischer Rundfunk's sound engineers - a tribute to Bernard Haitink by his long-time recording manager Wolfram Gaul can be found in the accompanying booklet. This release provides an excellent overview of their collaboration on masterpieces of the First Viennese School as well as German-Austrian Late Romanticism: outstanding compositions by Beethoven, Bruckner, Haydn and Mahler. The release includes complete recordings of Beethoven's "Missa solemnis", Bruckner's Symphonies Nos. 5 and 6, Haydn's oratorios "The Seasons" and "The Creation" and Mahler's Symphonies Nos. 3, No. 4 and No. 9. Numerous renowned vocal soloists and the Augsburg Domsingknaben all perform under Haitink's direction, together with the Bavarian Radio Chorus and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks.

outstanding recording quality
I thought at first I was buying some remasterings of famous Haitink Phillips and Decca recordings of the 70s and 80s.But these are all new modern live recordings of execptional quality , particularly dynamic range and depth.Sometimes perhaps the Bavarian RSO is not the Berlin Phil but the 3 Mahler Symphonies in particular are marvellous and all imo better than his earlier versions.I also enjoyed the Haydn oratorios. The German artiiculation is very well caught and every word is heard. The Beethoven Missa Solemnis won some awards but there are much better versions around.

Splendida raccolta di perle musicali dirette dal vivo da Haitink, grande direttore. Le esecuzioni sono affidate a cantanti di valore accompagnati dalla meravigliosa Orchestra della Radio Bavarese. Notevoli le registrazioni.

The price is incredible. The music is not any less so.
I bought his entire "Portrait" box set for less than $15 shipped (Canadian dollars). I played Mahler 3 first, of course, and my jaws dropped. I would have never thought that a huge complex orchestral piece can be played and recorded with this level of detail and clarity... all the wide palette of colors... exotic percussion... This is exemplary demo material for audiophiles.I have bought too many box sets lately, but I still clicked Add to Cart because at that price the Mahler 3 alone was more than worth it. In the US it's USD49, and even at that price I would say it was still a good deal for the entire box set. A total of 11 CDs came in - Bruckner 5/6, Mahler 3/4/9, Beethoven Missa Solemnis, Haydn Creations and Seasons. The rest was good, but his Mahler 3 was certainly the highlight of the set. Its status as a 'reference' recording was beyond any doubt. His Bruckner 6 was also exceptional and favourably reviewed.

A fabulous set
What a set this is. All I can say is a wholehearted recommendation.

Are you kidding?
15 bucks for 3 Mahlers and 2 Bruckners by Haitink? And great sound to boot. Best deal ever. Only negative is that 2 disc works, like the Mahler third, are packaged in a way that makes disc extraction difficult. I can put up with that but will likely resort to paper sleeves if i play this often - unlikely since I have the BPO version - 50 bucks but unbelievable sound out of Japan.
