The Iris Collection has a design more reminiscent of Celtic knot/Nordic vine trim work. The combination of cobalt and gold leaf overlay provides a robust brilliance that not only makes the Iris Collection stand out uniquely from other traditional and contemporary fine dinnerwares, but it also represents the Irish portion of our family heritage. The overlays aren't as robust as more expensive dinnerware, so hand washing is a must, even though the product boasts to be dishwasher safe. I've had the set for quite a while now and have put every piece in the dishwasher. I haven't had a problem. I would not have bought a set that was not dishwasher safe. **Q: What metal is the gold band made of? If it is lead, is it at safe levels? Has the gold faded after use?** A: By all apperances, it is gold. It still looks like the day I bought it and polishes well with Bar Tenders Helper. If you polish, be sure to avoid the gold finish. As near as I could learn about the tableware, it contains no lead. **Q: Is it safe to use in the microwave?** A: I have had them now for almost 2 years.
