Love the red hair!
Let me be upfront: Melanie Griffith is my favorite actress. There is a naivete about her that is both endearing and attractive. There are actresses who always exhibit certain traits no matter what role they play or how well they play it: Diane Keaton, Jessica Lange, and Goldie Hawn. Add Melanie to the list. She speaks slowly and softly in a measured sort of way. These traits are used to perfection in "Born Yesterday" and "Paradise" where they are key to the character. So, it is bizarre and simultaneously perfect casting to hire Melanie as an action hero. Only a vulnerable woman could portray a supposedly hardboiled tracker who serendipitously falls in love with her client. Lovesick and distraught over the loss of his Cherry 2000 bot, Sam reluctantly hires Melanie, a mere woman, to fetch a replacement bot stored in the badlands of a post-apocalyptic West. Why she falls in love with him is anyone's guess. Here's mine. Considering the men she sees on a daily basis--psychos, wackos, and dirty, unattractive edge dwellers--Sam looks like every woman's dream man. Although he is physically attractive, a man whose dream woman is a bot is seriously lacking essential brain matter. However, if I were to acquire a bot that looked like Gerard Butler, who adored me and wanted to please me and only me, well, ok, I get it now. A perfect bot as the dream woman. Sam, go get your bot.Now to the nitty-gritty: Their first obstacle is the barricade just outside the edge of town, designed to destroy a vehicle, but this vehicle--a muscled Ford Mustang-- bulls itself through without serious damage. Then E positions her car j-u-u-u-st right for the Great Magnet. When she climbs out and hangs off the car, to tie the rope on, I really want to laugh. Then the Uzis fire bullets all around but ne'er hitting them yet their guns hit the bad guys. Oh, the dead driver of the magnet keeps falling just right to shift the right gear to move the car right along into perfect position. Then get that car into the drainage ditch. Say wha? And she says it was easy this time.Oh, let's visit Uncle Jake, the famous retired tracker, who taught E everything he knows, for food and a safe place to sleep. How convenient!Let's repair an ancient airplane, get it off the ground amidst a hail of unfriendly bullets. Run into Ginger, the old girlfriend--ok, I see why he went to a bot--Ginger is another wacko, especially after Len is killed and she is concerned about those sandwiches. Of course, this strange behavior could be a cover for her disorientation now that her meal ticket is dead. And, oh, Sam learns that bots cannot truly replace a living, functioning human woman with a mind of her own to challenge, to admire, to love in unpredictable ways. In the final analysis, bots are predictable. One of the most deadly killers in a relationship is the same ol, same ol--predictability.Overall, this is a fun movie. Yes, it has silliness, but that is part of its fun. Seeing tiny, dainty Melanie Griffith as an action hero shooting bazookas is the best fun of all. But the very best part is the wild red hair!

A pretty good Blu-Ray version!
If you want the Blu-Ray disc, order the "Multi-Format" version. Amazon doesn't make this very clear in the product listing. This is a pretty good transfer from the source material. There's dirt and specks in some places so it's not a high quality job, but the picture is clear, colors and brightness are great, and it's all been stabilized so there's no shaking around. I'd say it's an above-average transfer, but could have still used some more work. The special features and presentation of menus are extremely basic, which is what you'd expect from a budget title.Cherry 2000 is definitely one of the more memorable post-apocalyptic future movies from the 80s and this is probably the best version you can get these days. It's corny, it's funny, and it has a lot of action and explosions as well as some interesting social commentary on what people thought the future would look like.

just enjoy it!
You can read all the other reviews about this "post apocalyptic sci-fi" and the editorial reviews for the details, but simply put, Cherry 2000 is a fun movie. Star power alone with seeing the sexy Melanie Griffith in her early years and the legendary Ben Johnson and Harry Carey Jr. in their twilight is reason enough to watch this movie. A young "Larry" Fishburn also makes an appearance. But that aside Tim Thomerson is great as the villian "Lester" with his sinister crew doing the "Hokey Pokey" and sending the killers out on their mission to kill the heroes and of course to be careful and be themselves. Don't forget the sandwiches. This movie is simply a stupid funny great movie. Now if you are in to seeing where a movie like this is made and you happen to be in Las Vegas and need to get out of town because you are losing your shirt. The locations are incredible. Head out west from Vegas 2 hours to Beatty Nevada, take a left a few miles in to the ghost town Rhyolite. You will recognize the ruins of a city built to lastforever that now is in ruins and was used as the "fringe" of humanity as Melanie Griffith heads in to the forbidden zone (Lester's territory). Lester's Sky Ranch is one hour north on Vegas in Valley of Fire State Park. This state park is used for numerous westerns ("The Professionals" with Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster for one), science fictions (Captain Kirk of the Star Trek Enterprise dies here in "Generations") and about 2,000 car commercials. Speaking of ghosts, that creepy hotel in the movie is the "Goldfield Hotel" in Goldfield Nevada, and hour or less north of Beatty. This once grand hotel that served raw oysters, fine wines from France, filet mignons and world renown pastries in the early 1900's and hosted the longest heavy weight prize fight in history has been closed for 60+ years and houses now nothing but ghosts. Considered by ghost hunters to be one of a few true "portals" in the world to the ghostly beyond. It is rumored the film crew for Cherry 2000 refused to take up lodging at night in the Goldfield Hotel during the filming in fear of the spirits. Even in the daytime film equipment unexpectectly failed and noises were heard that scarred the crap out of the extras. The Eye seen on the wall in the movie is still to this day visible on a nearby building. After your tour go back home and watch Cherry 2000 again for another bizarre appreciation for the movie and its locations.

A Fun Little Movie
What can I say about this except that I saw it years ago and it was good for a laugh, not taking itself too seriously. So when I saw that it was available in bluray I jumped at the chance to own it. It arrived in all it's glory, as advertised, in good condition and with no problems. If you're looking for something with Melanie Griffith that isn't about 'working girls' or 'body doubles', but is a fun little movie, then Cherry 2000 is right up your alley. It'll never win any awards but you will have a laugh or two!
