Davis 6162C Vantage Pro2 Plus Weather Station w/Solar Radiation & UV - Cabled
M**1
Works great until, well, it doesn't. QC seems to have slipped.
This is, or was, the third Davis weather station I've owned over the past dozen years. The first, the original Vantage, worked flawlessly for over 7 years until a nearby lightning strike took it out. I replaced it with a new Vantage Pro. THAT one worked for about three years before failing; and I upgraded to a newer one with solar capability in 2017. (I sent #2 back for repair, spending about $250 to get it back into working order.) The latest one failed within about 16 months of installing it. I returned it to Davis, dropped another $250 or so for repair; and reinstalled it this past February. Just yesterday, it failed once again. (Photo shows all outside functions of temp, wind, humidity failing to display. Re-start of station made on difference.)I find this particularly aggravating because these units supposedly are top-of-the-line; and are priced accordingly. And while it's simple enough to remove and send in the inside console, removing the outside unit from the roof of our two-story ranch home proves challenging at best.Note: we require the cabled version because our 1940s home consists of limestone walls 18" thick; with a metal roof. NOT friendly for wireless communication of any kind.Anyway, I plan to call Davis customer service and whine about this latest experience, but have no expectation other than the now-typical "send it all in and we'll fix it at your considerable expense." My new plan consists of moving on to another brand of weather station. Davis may have once been tops in the field, but it would appear the company has changed something in their components so the longevity of each unit doesn't appear to be of much concern. Very sad, but not entirely atypical.
