Berkley Gulp! Minnow Fishing Soft Bait

Pay attention to prices.
While the Berkley Gulp are great baits the prices are all over the place! I purchased a pack of 12 three inch (3") for $4.87 which is a fair price. Additionally added a pack of 4" to my order...much to my surprise the 4" with only 8 in the package rang up $10.00! Thankfully I still had time to delete the 4" from my order. I have since found that other retailers hold the price with most sizes and colors. The price can be the same because they have fewer in a package. Just have to pay attention...great product over all.

Caught 14 fish on one pack
A friend and I used a pack of the 4" pearl silvers to fish for bass in a half-acre farm pond. It seemed like the bass were contractually obligated to strike these things. We were jerking them (unweighted) through the shallows in the late summer evening with great success. They aren't super durable, but that is to be expected with these soft plastic guys- I'd say that durability is a problem inherent to soft baits, and these were no less durable than any other soft plastic baits I have used. There were eight lures in the pack, and we caught more than eight good fish, so I consider that a success. We also caught a decently-sized white crappie and a channel catish on these- if you are going for bass in a pond that is overrun by crappie, the crappie might give you some problems.

These never fail!
These are my go-to baits when nothing else seems to be working, and they never fail to produce. I've caught lake trout, brown trout, steelhead, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, walleye, and muskie off these. I've fished them under a float, bottom bouncing on jig heads, drop shot, and off of three way rigs. I basically match the presentation to the water conditions and they just work. The pearl white seems to be the top producer, but I have had luck with other natural minnow/smelt colors as well. They're fairly durable and can usually land 2-3 fish before swapping out for a new one. Over the years I've found no real need to carry any other type of plastics than these, and I never head out without them.

Just plain catches fish, simple as that.
I got a pack of the 2.5' Chartreuse Shad and I haven't been disappointed at all in their fish catching ability(their durability leaves a little to be desired, however). The baits in this particular pack have landed channel catfish, white and black crappie, largemouth, smallmouth, white, and hybrid striped bass, green sunfish, rock bass, and longnose gar. There could very well easily be more species that I've caught with these, those are just listed from the top of my head.

The hype is true
I’ve heard a lot about these baits and how good they are suppose to be. On my first outing I managed to get a 22 inch Walleye a white bass and a sucker. Works great on a 1/8oz jig. Let me just say the hype is true. I’ve also used the leaches on dropshot weights too with great success too. Mainly smallmouth bass!

These minnows always work across many species, but...
Gulp minnows just work, there's no denying that, but they are very soft and tear easily so it's not at all hard for a fish to grab it by the tail and tear it right off the hook.If you're fishing for a species that has a large enough mouth to engulf the bait and hook all at once, these would be fine, but smaller panfish just grab it by the tail and yank... you lose the fish AND the bait.

Excellent
I've been using the 3 inch minnows on 1/8 ounce leadhead jigs to catch walleye, smallmouth, yellow perch, and drum since the Gulp! minnows came out. I prefer the smelt and black shad colors, but others also work well. They are pretty fragile, but once a couple of fish have chewed on the top of the minnow, I turn it over so the light side is up and then clip off a half inch when that has been chewed to make them last longer.

Need to return to original recipe.....not the Gulp I was used to....
Not sure what Berkley is doing to Gulp - but upon opening a couple of packages recently that I bought in May - they smelled like burnt rubber and the fish avoided them. None of the "fishy" smell I was used to from Gulp. Also, if you do happen to get a package that smells right - if you don't use the entire opened package, they will smell like this in short order. Also, they break apart rather rapidly compared to what they used to. Even the Gulp "refresh" spray I had turned into nothing more than high-priced water (had no smell at all after 2 months). I was a Gulp user for years - and would use nothing else - but will not buy anymore. Berkley needs to return to their original recipe for this stuff to get my business back. I have talked to other fisherman that hold the same views. Please Berkley - return to original recipe. I would even be willing to pay more for it.
