Works Fine
This is a genuine Sony product. Works like it should to connect to portable hard drive for storage while on vacation. Also needed the adapter cable to play back stored video through the camcorder so that the date and time could be preserved. (Date and time not visible on video if downloaded via Sony's PlayMemories software.) Gave it five stars, but not happy that it wasn't included with the camcorder (Sony HDR-CX260V).

Gets the job done!
I got this to use it with the new version of Sony HDRCX580V High Definition Handycam 20.4 MP Camcorder with 12x Optical Zoom and 32 GB Embedded Memory (2012 Model) and I can tell you it works! with a USB stick and I was able to transfer the contents of the embedded 32GB memory on HDRCX580V camcorder without using a PC. There is some electronics in this USB adapter (It is not a dummy cable for sure) that enables 'HOST mode' operation on the camcorder that lets you transfer the files present in the camcorder's internal embedded memory to an externally attached HDD. The Camcorder's firmware detects that presence of this adapter and prompts you to take action like copy files, move files etc; But I have a fear that NTFS formatted HDDs are not supported? When I attached a Western Digital My Passport 1 TB (Black) it prompted me to format the drive! which I did not as there were existing files on it. After that I just used a regular SanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33 32GB USB Flash Drive (FAT32 formatted) which it recognized without any issues. FYI - When you do connect this adapter and use it with Sony HDRCX580V High Definition Handycam, the camcorder prompts you to connect the AC power adapter before enabling the Sony VMCUAM1 USB Adapter Cable If you are not in a position to have AC power to your camcorder you may not be able to transfer files. That is one reason for losing a star. Otherwise it gets the job done and I rate this with 4 stars! Cheers!

Works fine
This is a necessary part for your camera if you itend to use its back up to external hard drive function. I took my sony video camera cx260 to Bali where it performed flawlessly. I backed it up every evening on to a WD 2TB Passort drive. This cable is needed (doen't come with camera) to connect to the cable on the drive.

Works fine but why?
Does the trick though I'm a bit aggravated that the three 600+ cams we ordered required this non-included item to make videos and pictures accessible without trading out storage cards and such and that it took me mucho time with dysfunctional "identifying drive" attempts to figure out I needed to order this cable. Just another example of Sony's tightly held proprietary hardware philosophy. Sigh.

now I am ready
I use this cable to transfer video files to my computer or hard disk. Great product. I hate to review products where you tell me what I have to do or say don't ask me to review if you are going to tell me how much to say..

Need AC adapter to transfer!
I thought I got ripped off, when I didn't see the external drive being recognized by my CX-190. Since it was showing "ac adapter connection is recommended", I connected the camera to ac adapter and reconnected the drive and voila- I need to format my external drive! Anyway, I don't think I am going to take the ac adapter with me and hunt down a socket when my 16 GB SD card gets full, so looks like my 16 bucks went down the drain! I may as well take my laptop with me and transfer the contents. Yup connecting the camera to the USB drive also doesn't work, you do need the ac adapter plugged in!

USB 3 adaptor cable
The cables that comes with the small pocket USB 3 drives is just too short. I use the extension to plug into the back of a PC and set the drive on top so I can watch the activity light. The cable worked just fine and there was no degradation of the data transfer.
