When does caliper is turned on, what is the default: inch or MM?

It turns back on to whatever you had it set to when you last shut it off. Besides, it's only a button push to change it from one to the other.

How does the battery compartment open?

Turn the caliper over and there is a very small screw under the battery compartment. Remove the screw and the battery did should come off.

Do the jaws lock in position?

they do not automatically lock in position but there is a small thumbscrew that you can use to lock the jaws in position.

Can this calibration shut down automatically when not in use?

I believe it shuts it's self off after about a half hour
