Great way to introduce kids to music. Keep music fun!
This is no concert-quality ukelele, but it's actually pretty darn good. It's probably fair to say that I'm a bit of an instrument snob. I play cello, violin, electric and acoustic guitar, and piano, so I know a thing or two. But I'm really happy with this purchase. As I'd expect of any instrument with nylon strings, it takes A LOT of tuning over the first few days as the strings stretch out — especially since it came completely loose and untuned (which is the right way to ship it). But the tuners do their job nicely and after a few days the tuning starts to get pretty constant. Just get an app for your phone; they're free and do the job perfectly. The sound is pleasant: timbre is good; it's not so loud that the kids get on my nerves while playing it, unlike when they bang away on the piano; the frets are all just about where they need to be, so it's not dissonant or hard to play. It's sturdy enough that I expect it to take the inevitable beating without disintegrating. (I've even taught my dog to strum it!) Though we do make an effort to make sure they don't use it as a club. And the bright colors and somewhat whimsical graphic design make this more interesting and fun for the kids. But it's still a real instrument, so I can get a pretty good sound out of it, and play actual songs. That encourages the kids to make a real effort to produce something resembling music. Of course, I'm also careful not to be a jerk about it, and just let them strum nonsense so it stays fun.For the $21 I paid, this is very well worth the price. Very very happy with this purchase.EDIT: After a year of use and abuse, it's still going strong. One of my toddlers was banging away on the strings with a spoon, and we just lost the first string. No big deal. Will buy new strings for a few bucks.

Totally worth it!
Our 2yo daughter loved those cheap plastic fishing-line-string ukuleles from the bargain store, but they sound so bad and I was worried the thin strings which constantly popped off would cut her fingers. But this ukulele isn't really that much more expensive yet it is light years better. It's solid (versus a bunch of cheap snap-together plastic), the strings are safely attached and won't just pop out unless you totally unwind them, and it can actually be tuned and sound wonderful! I'm sure there is a big difference between this and a 'professional' ukulele, but I was able to follow along with Youtube instructional videos and a free 'ukulele tuner' smartphone app and get this thing sounding beautiful. After every few days I just pull out the app and it takes about 3 minutes to re-tune this thing, and it's good to go. And now, even her random toddler string-plucking sounds kind of pretty!

Boy loved it
My Down Syndrome toddler was BEYOND thrilled when he got this, and would...not...put..it...down. By midday on Christmas Day he had managed to loosen the long straight bit (?) from the body of it, but it was being held together by a fairly substantial strip of laminated surfacing, so I just tacked it back with wood glue and hid it from him for a day. It's now April and we're going strong. The best thing about this is that you get a gentle 'strummy' noise from it and not the ghastly electronic cacophony that makes you want to put children out into the yard ...

Fun for 1 month
We bought this for our daughter (who will be 3 in August). She loved "playing" this ukulele every day the past month. She's obsessed with the movie Coco and pretends to be a guitar player/singer. Just this past weekend we were tightening up the plastic strings and 1 came detached from the metal. Upon closer inspection it looks like the plastic strings are just glued to the metal adjustment pieces. I imagine they will all detach here soon enough. I'm not sure if I should try to use a strong adhesive to reattach it or figure out another way to secure it. the strings are cheap plastic and does not seem like they will last long. Also, the paint on the body of the guitar is already chipping. She's had a lot of fun with it the past month so I hope we can figure out a way to get more life out of it. I wouldn't purchase it again.

Cheap! Buy a real ukulele
This lasted less than two months. My son dropped it and the neck broke off of the body. It’s glued on very poorly and not made for well for kids.

2 Year Old Likes Strumming, Being Just Like Daddy
I got this for my son to play with while his dad is playing his guitar. My son is 2 so he’s still a little young for it but I wanted him to have something for when his dad was playing and he really likes strumming it and being just like his daddy. We’ve had it for over a month now (green/yellow one) and no paint has come off and nothing’s broken so far (concerned from other reviews). He can get pretty rough with it too!

SMELLS horrible/toxic - not the same as our other HAPE UKELELE
We have a red Hape Ukelele that we love, so we got a second (blue) for our second child's birthday. In the past, we've loved Hape for being a relatively non-toxic brand with natural materials. This new ukelele purchased on Amazon smells highly toxic, with a strong chemical, moth-ball-like odor. I'm not sure if the smells is from the product itself (glue, paint, finish, etc.), or if one of the warehouses handling it sprayed an insecticide in the hole in the box. (There is a hole designed in the product packaging where I suppose someone other than Hape could have applied a chemical.) We've been trying to off-gas the uke smell by keeping it on the patio for 3 days, and the smell is so strong that after tuning it outside this morning, my hand that played the strings smells like the chemical/toxin/odor. The smell is giving us a headache, so we can't bring the ukelele inside. Any ideas for getting it to clear more quickly?
