## Overview

The Rode NTG5 Shotgun Condenser Microphone Kit is a professional-grade, ultra-lightweight (76g), and compact (203mm) shotgun mic designed for demanding location recording and filmmaking. Featuring a revolutionary circular port acoustic design, it delivers natural, uncoloured sound with an impressively low self-noise of just 10dBA. Its supercardioid polar pattern ensures focused audio capture, while RF-bias technology and conformal coating guarantee durability in adverse environments. The kit includes premium accessories like the WS10 windshield and PG2-R pistol grip, making it a complete solution for broadcast and streaming professionals seeking crystal-clear audio with unmatched reliability.

## Description

The NTG5 is a short, ultra-lightweight shotgun microphone ideal for use in the most demanding recording applications. Featuring a revolutionary acoustic design with circular ports replacing the linear slots found in other shotgun mics, it offers unmatched transparency and a more natural, uncoloured sound. Combined with a tightly controlled frequency response, smooth off-axis response, and very low self-noise (just 10dBA), the NTG5 sounds spectacular in a wide variety of applications, particularly location recording and demanding filmmaking scenarios where superlative audio is the imperative. No excuses. The NTG5 is a boom operator’s dream, weighing a mere 76g and measuring just over 20cm, making it ideal for use on long, demanding shoots. It features RF-bias circuitry to ensure reliable performance in adverse environments, with excellent resistance to high humidity, severe cold, damp, and dust. And it comes with a WS10 deluxe windshield, PG2-R pistol grip, and other accessories – the perfect location recording kit.

Review: The perfect voiceover mic? - Bought this mic "Used/Good" fulfilled by desertcart in the wild hopes that I could FINALLY find a good voiceover mic... And I'm in love. First, the good: this mic has hardly any self noise, and in the booth I can get voice to a perfect -23LUFS with a noise floor below -54db with the mic 6-8" off my mouth. If you angle it 45° off axis and position it just slightly above, I haven't had huge issues with breath noises, plosives, or anything else, which means I don't need the (excellent) windscreen. I have not yet tried the I closed dead cat but suspect it will work as advertised. The NTG 5 has got plenty of low end for voiceover work, a nice clear and detailed top end without a whole lot of sibilance (I have a fairly sibilant voice AND gap teeth, and am aurally sensitive to sibilance, which isn't fun, but this mic manages it well). It needs just a touch of EQ to sound its best, at least on my voice, but I also tend toward muddiness, so I can't blame the mic there. Bright enough without sounding brittle, harsh or sibilant. Rich enough without adding too much muddiness (unless you get under 4" and hit the proximity effect). Easy to listen to for long periods. Barely even needs EQ. In short, I'm in love! The cons (and this is nitpicky AF) - I wish the pistol grip mount A, came pre-assembled (I immediately lost the miniscule screwdriver included with the mic), and B, that it came in 5/8 diameter instead of 3/8 (and included the usual adapter). I get that it's a "location mic" and that 3/8 is the default for boom poles, but it's more common to adapt up to 5/8 than down to 3/8, if that makes sense. I'd also be happy if they included a 5/8F-3/8M adapter, but ordering one shouldn't be difficult, just a temporary mild annoyance. I haven't tested it outdoors or in an untreated room, but I suspect it'll do well for live recording and outdoor applications. I'll know in another month or two of rode testing if it's the PERFECT voiceover mic, but I shure can't fault the way it sounds in the booth!
Review: Everyone loves its flat sound, I love its crystal clear highs - The convenience of a full kit is undeniable, and usually bundles mean you save some. Am loving this mic, using it alongside my trusted Rode Videomic NTG. They sound similar enough to make it easy in post to match them. But the NTG5 clearly has lower self-noise, better rear 3/4 rejection, and especially far superior rendition of the high frequencies (the Videomic NTG by comparison feels like it's under a pillow, when listening to dialogue in your headphones... well I am exaggerating but you get the point!). It does get boomy with my voice at 12" distance, so I have to tame the low end (I can't imagine how I'd sound with the NTG3!!!), but I guess this could turn into an advantage in extreme cases where the mic has to stand further away from the subject.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this mic rechargeable? Or does it need constant power?**
A: It needs phantom power, there is NO battery option. I’ve used it many times with a zoom H6 and Zoom F8N which are quite portable and supply phantom power.

**Q: How far away from the mic will this record quality audio?**
A: how loud is the sound ....?

There are several factors that must be considered ... such as ambient sound ... this is a condenser microphone, which means that it will pick up any ambient sound ... the closer you are to the specific sound you want to record, the better. I am not an expert, but of all the microphones that I have this is the best.

**Q: Can you use this on a smart phone? Or do you need a special cord?**
A: No, it needs power, so no use for direct connection to a phone.

**Q: Can this mounted to a dslr camera (panasonic lumix gh4)?**
A: You will also need to power the mic.
