clear and concise
really nice seeing an introduction to these not as well known variants outside their place of origin. It is especially interesting to learn of the ingenious counting rules. Really interesting

The best English language source on Ouk and Makruk
This thin volume is the best English language source on the games of Ouk and Makruk, and not just because it is the only English book on the subject. Gifford wrote "Thai Chess and Cambodian Chess" because he was unable to find any other published works on the subject. The entire thing is just 87 pages, which includes a few pages used to print pieces that can be cut out and played with. The author cannot really be faulted for writing a short book however since he covers everything in sufficient detail. Only a specialist or a serious student would require more information. The most interesting parts of the book are the first few chapters which give some brief historical detail and explain the pieces, board layout and rules. The bulk of the remaining pages suggest openings and progression of play, but that's only really of use to those who can understand both descriptive and algebraic notation. The last pages talk about methods of making Ouk and Makruk sets, though you can pick up a plastic set with a paper board in any Thai sporting goods shop for $9 or a decent wooden ouk set with board in Cambodia for around $12. You can also get a plastic and paper Thai Chess set here on Amazon: Thai Chess (Makruk) Plastic (Black/White) No Box Checker World Chess Collector Made in Thailand

Good intro
Small book, mostly introductory. The book's strong point is its description of opening games. Not too much info on middle game or checkmate problems. Diagrams a bit too shrunken but can be made out with some squinting. Curiously, the theories in the book were apparently developed by westerners trying to figure out the game, apparently with not much input from professional thai chess players. The book is small, but surprisingly professional, written by an author who knows how to think like a chess book writer.
