A completely updated dictionary for children ages 8-11 includes over 36,000 entries; more than 900 vibrant, full-color illustrations, photographs and diagrams; 250 word-history paragraphs; over 120 synonym paragraphs; and special sections that include geographical names, signs and symbols, an introduction to Greek and Latin roots in English, a guide for writers and a list of literary works used in the text. Review: Great Elementary Dictionary - We have used other children's dictionaries with much frustration.. many have overly limited words which is very frustrating to a child who is learning and cannot find a word. We often had to use two different dictionaries to find all the words. This one is very thorough and contains most every word in our studies (and everyday words). It is a good size and very sturdy to withstand many years of use. My kids are not as frustrated and are enjoying learning new words. Perfect addition to our homeschool collection or for any elementary aged child that wants to enhance their learning at home. Review: Everyone is judged by their vocabulary. - My students really really love this dictionary. The word histories boxes are enticing. The root word boxes help my students see how important know this can be to understand vocabulary without releaning every word. There are nice pictures sprinkled throughout the book. Definitions are not too difficult. I wish it had alternate spellings of words. I have tried other dictionaries and my students (3rd to 8th grade) like using this one. That's the goal. Inspire kids to use the dictionary more. So I love to see them using it.

Only For Kids Reading at Reading Level
Let me start by saying this is an excellent dictionary. The illustrations are wonderful, the book is sized just right for 3rd through 5th graders, and the words are defined appropriately. However, when I ordered this book, I expected it to contain adult words that were defined for children. This dictionary contains words only that a 3rd through 5th grader would know. For example, "exacerbate" (to make worse) and "susurration" (a whispering sound) were both not in this dictionary. I bought this dictionary for my friends third grader because she is reading books that use words such as this. She does read at a high school reading level, but some of these words were in books like Nancy Drew, which is not a high school level book. So, if you are getting this dictionary for a child whose vocabulary is that of a normal 3rd - 5th grader, I would highly recommend this dictionary. If you are getting a dictionary for a child who reads above their reading level, consider something else. This dictionary only defines books for a 3rd through 5th grade vocabulary. I still wanted something illustrated, because even a third grader reading at a high school level likes illustrations, so I went with the Oxford Illustrated Dictionary.

Great Children's Dictionary
My 6 year old loves this dictionary. He will read it for fun on days we don't use screens. It defines words using words and phrasing he is able to understand so he actually can learn the new words. While it is written for children, it still gives accurate definitions so you won't have to fix incorrect understanding later on. I have been completely happy with this purchase. At some point we will switch to a traditional dictionary, but for early elementary, this is perfect.

My 8.5 year old son LOVES this
I wasn't sure which dictionary to get, but this one is a real winner. I had read in the reviews that the pages were thin, but I think they're totally fine. It's got enough pictures to be interesting without being distracting and the definitions are clear and concise and in kid language. My son is super excited about this and though he has no history of being a "good" student, he's so excited about this book that he just sits and reads it like a chapter book. Wow!

Has great features for the grade-school child
I am very pleased with the features in this dictionary, which I purchased for my 1st grade home-schooled child (who reads at about a 3rd grade level). I really like that they change guide word colors for each letter so it is easy to notice when the letters have changed. Also, they have the alphabet printed along the side of each page, thus eliminating the need to perpetually sing the alphabet song to determine which way to turn the page! This is a school-worthy dictionary - there are lots of words my child already knows and most of the words I expect her to encounter in 3rd-5th grade level reading books, which is the recommended age range. The print is fairly large and easy to read and there is at least one colorful picture or word history, etc. text box on every page. In short, this dictionary is interesting and nice to look at while remaining very functional.

Gotta Love Words
I ordered this for my first grader. I had not even thought of purchasing a child's dictionary until one day he skyped with his eight year old cousin who insisted he look up a word. It was hilarious listening to him explain to her that he looks up words online. Ordered it that day and my son loves it. The definitions are age appropriate and offer a clear understanding if words and there are even some fun pictures to help with comprehension.

For elementary students
I purchased this after I had got 'Merriam-Webster's First Dictionary: Revised & Updated Edition New for 2012' from Amazon.ca to aid my kid's homeworks. The 'First' dictionary is a great one with easy-to-understand explanations and with funny pictures, its vocabulary is limited so that my kid could not find many words from it. This one has 36,000 entries so every words in my kid's homeworks in it. Each words have centred dots to show "end-of-line divisions-places where you can put a hyphen if you have to break up a word because there is room for only part of it at the end of a line." Word root, word history, and several labels are also helpful. Moreover, there are guide for writers, geographical names, and list of books for quotes in the dictionary seem to be a warm concern for young students and parents. This one is the U.S. edition, so that spellings are not the Canadian-prefered, and it also has the U. S. map instead of Canadian one.
