WINNER OF THE E.B. WHITE READ-ALOUD AWARD • The first book in the If I Built series kicks off with a young boy’s ideal wheels, from acclaimed author and illustrator Chris Van Dusen. “Energetic verse and jubilant, action-packed artwork make this tale of a young inventor’s fantastic daydream a joy ride.”— Publishers Weekly ”My car will be cool! My car will be keen! My car will be one big fantastic machine!” Sitting in the back seat of his dad’s car, Jack begins to imagine all the ways he would improve the vehicle. After spending the night designing, tweaking, and refining, Jack is prepared to give an eye-opening tour of the car he'd like to build. For starters, there's a snack bar, a pool, and even a robot named Robert to act as chauffeur. Plus, the motor releases fragrances of blueberry muffins and roses rather than gasoline. With Jack's soaring imagination in the driver's seat, readers will be deep-sea diving one minute and flying high above traffic the next in this whimsical, tantalizing take on the car of the future. Packed with detailed illustrations recalling an era of classic American automobiles, bright colors, and an infectious rhythm, this wonderful read-aloud is a launch pad for imaginative fun. Review: My son loves this book—and so do I! - As many of you already know, if your kid likes a book, you'll end up reading it together over and over and over again. That means it's pretty important that you like it, too. It's never fun when you ask your little one to grab a book and he comes back with something you can't stand reading. I'm therefore very picky about the books I buy. Chris Van Dusen's "If I Built A Car" is pure pleasure. First of all, it's just a terrific concept: a creative young boy describes his dream car. The illustrations are lush and vibrant, and the rhyming verse is creative and playful. Mr. Van Dusen perfectly captures the magic of a child's imagination. And while I think you couldn't go wrong getting this book for a boy, I'm confident many girls would be enthralled by it as well. Definitely a book you'll delight in reading and rereading. Enjoy! Review: Fun cute book! Awesome! - This is an amazing book and my child’s new favorite. We read it probably 4x a day..! It rhymes like cat in the hat and is automotive related which makes it fun for dad lol

Kids will Love It
I bought this book to read to my grandchildren. Van Dusen is the author and he has three other books in his "If I Built" series. Since I already had "If I built a School" I knew I had to get this book too. My grandkids loved that book and loved "If I Built a Car" just as much. These two books opened up my grandkids imagination and we too talked about schools and cars that we would like to create.

Not a fan of kids books and I love this book
One of my biggest pet peeves with kids books is that most seem to be written as though the book can have rhyming/cadence or vocabulary, but not both. But this book proves the others wrong. When two coworkers recommended this book, I broke down and got it for my kid. He loves this book and I really enjoy reading it to him. He’s too young to understand all the words, so the vivid colors on EVERY page keep him engaged. The cadence is almost perfect, and the rhyming is very good. Absolutely no complaints there. There are references to various vehicles, materials, etc. scattered throughout the book, so I think this is also a good read for kids ready to start trying to build up their vocabulary and reading comprehension. The illustrations follow along closely to the words, which will be helpful to new readers. All in all, so glad I bought this book. Will be getting more from the author in the future! P.S. Jack’s dog is the best =)

Colorful and Imaginative Story
While I found this book to be very colorful and imaginative, the writings were a little to advance for my 4 yr old toddler grandson. He did enjoy the different transformations of the car, but otherwise didn't show much interest. However, I will hold on to it as he does love cars and may find it more engaging in a year or two. Another thing I personally did not care for is the size. The quality of the soft bound pages are very good. However, I like read to him at bedtime and this book was somewhat awkward and large to comfortably read in bed.

CANT LIVE WITHOUT
My kids adore this! Both my sons ages 1.5 and 3.5 love this book and have for a while now. The rhythm makes it fun for me to read and the illustrations are perfect.

Fantastic Book
Super fun to read with kids and full of imagination. Fair warning that the latest book in the series, If I Built a Town, is terrible.

Super fun and educational!
Chris Van Dusen is a talented author. Perfect book for our 5 year old twins. I read the book to their reception class and the teacher immediately purchased it for the classroom - great use of imagination and rhyme to help early learners with their reading / phonics. My kids and I love it so much I bought several copies to give as birthday presents; they have been a big hit!

A Car
Outstanding illustrations, great vocabulary and rich use of the language. It fulfills my expectations to use it with English as a second language (ESL) students.
