Lexi Laney and Clare Hart grew up on Nantucket Island, fast friends who revel in their beach adventures --specifically those involving a unique island haunt, a hidden cove they have named "Moon Shell Beach." When their bond is frayed by serious disagreements, Lexi leaves the island with her new husband, wealthy Ed Hardin. Clare remains behind, engulfed in island life, and opens her own "Sweet Hart" chocolate shop. When Lexi returns many years later, divorced and bereft of any money or comforts (due to a prenuptial agreement), she opens a boutique--right next door to Clare's. She specializes in distinctive items, many of them expensive, and has named her shop "Moon Shell Beach." More resentment arises, as Clare feels that Lexi's name for the shop is another betrayal. She has co-opted something that belonged to both of them. The author brings the story to a satisfying, yet predictable conclusion, with the women forging a new bond and also finding new romance. Thayer's style is easy to delve into, and except for the predictability of the events, it is a satisfying read. One that deserves four stars. This novel covers a long period of time, from childhood to adulthood, but the transitions were easy to follow.
