Borges isn't the best poet, but he isn't the worst by far. I once read somewhere that if Borges had never published a short story, he would still be remembered as a fine poet (at least in Latin America). I can agree with that assessment.Borges poems are presented in Spanish and in English translation on the facing page. That's the best way to do any translation of poetry. It allows someone like me, with a good working knowledge of español, to translate the poems myself line-by-line and compare them with the translated words.Some of Borges's poems are playful with mysteries, mirrors, and time, like his short stories. Some of his standard wordplay is there, twisting phrases and meanings. Many of the poems are quite heartfelt and good. Some are ho-hum. This is some of the greatest poetry you’ll ever read. Original Spanish on left side, incredible English translation on the right, poetry of the highest soaring order. Modern but accessible. Simply expressed but intelligent. Probably better than his ficciones which I own. You won’t be disappointed. The translations are awesome, to reiterate. Don’t forget to buy his Fictions in the companion volume.

I had to have this book as I am replenishing my collection of great writers. I’m collecting favorites and classics. Borges is such a revered writer and his poetry and prose are irresistible. The vivid images and steering prose of the late 20th century Spanish language writers on this side of the world like Borges, Neruda, Paz and Marquez are incomparable.

This is some crazy poetry, but I can't say I didn't expect it. Well translated, for the subject matter as it is.

I think Borges is mostly known for his stories, but he is also one of my absolute favorite poets. When I need to escape into a realm of vital relevance, this is the book.

How tragic that I waited till my doddering old age to read Borges!Of the many hundreds of volumes of poetry I've read through the course of a long life, this is one of the greatest.

Love the book, but i wish the seller had stated that it had a dedication written on the first page. I would have liked to know that beforehand as i bought this for someone else.

The page edges were very rough and all the pages were different widths. It was for a gift so I didn’t have time to return and order a new one.
