Farewell to the late great Jack Bruce

Farewell to the late great Jack Bruce. (The gold standard of electric bass.) It was a good time to supplement my modest collection, and I admit I was intrigued reading about a collaboration that not only nudged Mick Taylor from the Stones, but got Carla Bley volunteering to join in with some very heady mellotron. There Whistle Stop performance on BBC is good. This is even better. This is more jazzy and abstract than the rock icons that Jack is readily identified with, and needs a couple of listens to sink in, but well worth the effort. (Also, I've noticed that an earlier release of this material has garnered some feedback about poor recording with various instruments lost in the mix. I didn't find this to be the case with this iteration, so I assumed that someone came in and fixed things with a good new mastering.)

Historically important and more importantly, superb.

As mentioned in another (great) review, the mix of the concert is the only (slight) downside... It is a very worthy release, certainly not least due to the members and their individual contributions, although that is when the issue of mix/sound quality lets us down.But!- Not to worry, this is still a thoroughly rewarding release and perhaps one of the continuous treats is that of hearing new nuances in time, which, on some tracks, can, at first easily go unnoticed...And, Mick Taylor! So under-served after Rolling Stones membership; Jack Bruce also reminding those who care, just how much of Cream he actually was. Stunning.Highly recommended, but definitely consider his brilliant debut solo album, 'Songs for a Tailor', and then it's further on up the rope ladder....

    Stupendous over-looked gem!

Great music from a superb group of musucians! Like Jack Bruce himself,a hard-to-categorize.Truly "fusion" music, but not in the stiff, lame, limited stereotyped manner of Return To Forever (tho I appreciated their talent).Jack Bruce and the others on this double-c.d.have such a wide and deep scope of talent.I'd never heard of this group when I was a kid.The "music industry" didn't know how to market them,I guess...
