A must have for parents with specail needs
I have a 6 year old with a multitude of disorders. I am only on chapter 4 of this book, but I have begun to implement the strategies. I have never felt as confident in being able to teach her how to do things. The book refers to the parent as the teacher and the child as the student, talks about your 'classroom' as the setting you are teaching each skill in. There is an entire chapter about attention and when it is best to teach skills, how to know when your child will best be able to pay attention and ideas on how to get your child's attention. This book really breaks everything down into simple steps. I have read other books where I felt I couldn't apply the methods into my specific situation with my child, but this book is actually applicable to our situation. I highly recommend this book to anybody with any child who had difficult learning new things.

Great guide for parents of special needs children or clinicians engaged in parent education
I ordered this book to assist a family whom I am working with teach their son daily living skills in their home. The book uses non-technical terms consistent with the principles of applied behavior analysis to better equip and empower parents of individuals with special needs to have the skill set needed to help their child reach their fullest potential. Highly recommend!

Highly recommend, One of the best books I've read so far
One of the best books I've read so far, and I've read a lot of them dealing with special needs! My daughter has Autism and I try to get as much information as possible and this book has it! It's written in plain English and it's not too complicated, which I love. It really does give real life strategies to help you help your child in becoming independent. Highly recommend.

An important addition to your Autism library
I read so many books to try to give my high functioning autistic son the best chance possible in life. This book gives detailed ideas for preparing your child for adolescence and adulthood. I really liked that they give examples of skill your child will need to develop in order for them to be independent. As a parent, we know the obvious things like personal care but some things I wouldn't have thought of.

Great Book!!! As a mother of an autistic child, it’s a great book to own. I thought I knew most of what comes with raising an autistic son but this book goes into further detail & advise that we may use.

Great book for parents and caregivers
Excellent book for parents and caregivers to read and keep for reference. The author provides lots of practical advice for daily living skills as well as future needs. Some things like toilet training and dealing with or understanding money are included in the book. Really great for anyone assisting those with special needs.

Not worth the money
This is a book which tells you how to break everyday tasks down into small steps so your child will learn the tasks. However, if you have a special needs child you probably already do this. The toilet training section, which I was interested in, told me nothing new that any other book on toilet training has told me. I thought it was far too expensive for what it is. Very disappointed.

Hidden gem for teaching independence skills
Great book on teaching independence skills to children with special needs. It appears to be designed for kids with mild intellectual disabilities but could be adapted for more severe difficulties or possibly other diagnoses like Autism Spectrum Disorders or ADHD. It is based on an ABA approach and is very clear and straightforward. Clearly written by people who have done this a lot! I’d recommend it to parents and beginning professionals.
