intriguing and insightful
Beyer's book provides a basic primer for the past time of thorobred handicapping. His theoretical base provokes reflection and insight as to the inner-workings of picking a winner. As of this writing, I have not had the opportunity to apply this approach to any race; however, his influence on me will be profound. The book has depth while not bogging you down with terminology. For me, the content was such that I could not lay the book down after opening the cover.

Picking Winners
I definitely picked a winner when I chose to purchase this book. It is very detail oriented and easy to understand. I chose the rating of I like it over I love simply because I have not had a chance to finish reading it yet. However, if what I am reading is what the rest of the book is like, I would select I love it. The shipping was extremely prompt and the price was competitive. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to watch horse rating, whether you consider yourself a beginner or an advanced better. It cover all the bases when it comes to placing bets. It is a great refresher course for anyone who considers themselves more than a beginner.

Old Information
This book was written back in the 70's when Beyer ratings were first created by the author, Andrew Beyer. It's very interesting and informative as to how the formulas were generated, but much of the book is only about the creating of the numbers. A Beyer rating basically measures the speed of a horse in a given race factoring in track conditions, track bias, jockey weight, etc. In theory a horse with a Beyer rating of say 85 that ran in a $5000 claiming race is as good as a horse with the same 85 rating that ran in a Stakes race. Anyhow, Beyer ratings have been around for decades now and are part of the Daily Racing Form, so this book really goes over old information. I did know this when I bought it, but thought there would be more insight into what to do with the Beyer number when handicapping - there isn't much more that him saying the higher the Beyer and faster the horse. Unfortunately anyone that handicaps horseracing knows that definitely isn't the case.

A Classic Read
I thought the author would know his stuff but that the analysis and methods might be dated. Nope. Thoroughly entertaining storytelling and the methods translate to modern racing. Masterful.

I read this book repeatedly
If you want to learn how to play horse racing, Picking Winners is a must read. If you want to make money, best to read every 10 years or so to remind you of some of Beyer’s best strategies.

A must for the investor who likes to play dangerous
I bought this book on Jimmys suggestion. Jimmy Cramer. After reading it I understand why Jimmy suggested it. This book helped me avoid this current market condition. Worth it for the investor who likes risk.

日本の競馬予想理論に多大な影響を与えていることを実感しました。
Andrew Beyer

Great Book
Anyone who has an interest in horse racing will find Andrew Beyer's book insightful. The section on how to read the pace figures in a horses' past performances is worth the price of admission alone, let alone the other insights contained in this wonderful book. I purchased the book primarily for his perspective on speed, and speed figuring, but ended up getting more out of the other anecdotes that he talks about like pace, class, weight, track biases, and crucially, the intentions of trainers - invaluable information for any punter!
