I've used probably four or five of Walkenbach's books over the years and they've all been very well done. They contain all the information the Excel user needs, he does a great job of anticipating the readers' questions, and he includes enough humorous observations to make what might otherwise be a boring exercise quite enjoyable. These favorable impressions are all based on using his other titles purely as reference works; i.e., I have a question about an Excel related topic, I look it up and read only what I need to close the book and go back to work.This title, however, is different. I am not a trained programmer, and I don't know enough to "pick a programming topic" and then read only what applies to my question. Thus, I have begun reading on page 1 and will read through to the end, certain that he'll have covered what I need to know. I'm about 20% of the way in so far and am amazed by what I've learned already. I'm even MORE impressed with his ability to communicate to someone like me, with a broad Excel background, but virtually no programming skills. With every page, my confidence grows that I'll soon be enjoying greater productivity, and accolades from co-workers who depend on me to get the most out of the tools they use.When it comes to Excel, John Walkenbach TOTALLY ROCKS... however, I have no idea about whether his banjo playing measures up. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely well written for the "slightly" initiated VBA'er *by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2013* By that I mean the words that Walkenbach uses to explain the various aspects of VBA are "understandable." However, it doeshelp if you've spent some time reading other books on VBA, and Excel for that matter, and then you may be better able to judgefor yourself how he, more often than not, better explains the topic in clear and concise language. The reference has a profuse distribution of examples of VBA code. The text has 31 Chapters, and I am just into Chapter 9 at this time, but I am reading thetext, word for word, line for line, page for page, and performing some of the examples for myself. However, I have most, if notall of Walkenbach's references on Excel and VBA for I personally feel these are great "go-to" references when you need a VBAor Excel question answered (I currently have 7 of his books but may have missed some I have at work, including this same textin the 2007 version). In a few instances, however, I have had to Google. The Appendix is thorough, and the Index is quiteextensive and covers most topics that I could think of, at least at this moment in time. There may be a few not covered, but onemust realize no text is perfect. I probably have 20+ reference texts on VBA. I rank Walkenbach at the top for his overall ability to better explain things, and thus allow me, at least, to "connect the dots." Lately however, I have been using it a lot and getting some very useful knowledge from it. I am pretty good with excel. I use it daily and have been doing that for many years now. I do a lot of power user type stuff with pivot tables, vba macros, custom programs, integrating with other software and databases. I say this because I feel I have a very good working knowledge with excel and this book has still taught me some very useful things. It has enabled me to streamline a lot of my code and do things more efficiently. I recently delved into working with the Ribbon X portion of Excel to put all of my macros into a neat little tab. This book just touches on it but does enough to give me the building blocks to do more. The examples are very useful (unlike other books I have read) and the author does a good job of giving you examples of why you would want to do something a certain way. Excel can do a TON of stuff and this book does a good job at hitting the important and useful items. There is always more to learn and certain things this book didn't go into as full of detail as I would have liked but even then it is over 1,000 pages. The CD that it comes with has all the examples and those are great to work with to have some boilerplate code to build from.
