Decent Java introductory test
This book introduces the Java programming language (it is the textbook for an introductory CS class I'm taking). The main difference between this and other Java books is that in this one you mostly modify picture and audio files instead of the usual writing of "command-line" type programs (such as programs that add and subtract numbers and that kind of thing). This is supposed to make programming more interesting for the "iPod generation" (whatever that means). I personally would have probably found more use in a more traditional approach, since I want to apply what I learn about programming to biological applications, and an approach based on more textfile editing would have been more useful to me. Still, the book is fun and engaging, and I get why some people might prefer it.

Outdated, but a good start for new programmers
First, please know that if you are working with a Mac, the CD will not work as it is no longer supported. However, the information in the book, although some is outdated, makes it easy to learn. A bit high in price for how old the information is.

Computer education needs more books like this
Let's get things straight without bulls***ting.PROS1 progressive learning, for beginners!2 very accessible teaching style3 MULTIMEDIA APPROACH, innovative and effectiveCONS1 knowledge scope is too essential and simple(which is nothing bad), but that makes it non-applicable/expandable2 expensive, overpricedIn all, if you are serious about Java or multimedia, this should be your first textbook but definitely not the last one. After finishing this, you need a more sophisticated text to progress.

Overpriced Old Textbook
Content-wise it's okay, but $150 for a first edition book that's over 10 years old and was published when Java 5 was *just* coming out? Can you say, "Required Textbook?" That's the only reason how this book can remain at this price point. No one would or should buy a book this old for this price. If you are brand new, and I mean BRAND NEW, to programming, this is an okay book. But let's be honest, few people who have a *choice* will pick a 12 year old book at $150. If you're looking to learn on your own, there are better books out there - either new(er) or old but were written so well they've withstood the test of time...and I bet they won't be over $50.The exercises are pretty good though but again...$150.

CHEAP USED BOOK - GREAT CONDITION
I received this item particularly late. Later than the other items I purchased from Amazon. Other than the time it took to arrive, three weeks later, I am pretty satisfied with my purchase. Best deal under the sun. It was missing the instructional CD-Rom though, but it's ok I didn't need it.
