Book of Hours: Illuminations by Simon Marmion Hardcover – March 24, 2005

My daughter is on the spectrum and adores a wide range of cultural/spiritual art....esp Mother Mary. She works so hard for her schooling; loves her teacher and therapists like family. She earned this beautiful little book and carries it with her EVERYWHERE. She even sleeps with this and her my little pony blanket. She takes it to class and therapy with her everyday, it is the sweetest thing. I wasn't raised Catholic, but appreciate the illuminated artwork and archetypal images as a reader...basically all the good things that came of the religion. My beloved mother in law (she's my grandmother-in-law but treats me like a daughter) is Catholic and the kindest woman I've ever known. There are many benefits in all kinds of religions and spiritual practices. I am thankful of my kids for all they have shown and taught me spiritually. So I'm happy to encourage my daughter's and her siblings' multi-faceted spiritual journey with this one too ❤

This book fulfilled all my hopes. It makes me hungry of seeing the originals, to buy something so deliciously done. It shows with grace and information several of the most exquisite illustrations from books of hours of our ancestors. We often call the middle ages a time of darkness and ignorance. But certainly in those times some of the most exquisite and perennial works were done, and I am thinking also about cathedrals, and others of the same kind. I thank the authors and Amazon for making this available at such small prices. Why am I not giving the topmost classification? I just would like to have it more and more of the same. So keep giving us more of the same, and some kind of Manual about these kind of works and authors, and about the art of doing it. Congratulations!

This is a little book showing all the illuminated from one manuscript in the Huntingdon collection from the mid-15th century illustrated by the master Simon Marmion. There is an excellent and clearly written introduction explaining what a book of hours is and what the little book contains. There are further descriptions with each painting and the reproductions are a very good quality. I would recommend this book, and it could be used even to teach older children about books of hours. The reader who is further interested can find a film on youtube showing more of simon marmions work, which is in saint petersburg, the youtube is in russian, but that does not matter for understanding the paintings. marmion is a very great painter.

This is a gem of a book for the variety of examples of manuscripts. I bought it 2 years ago and refer back to it repeatedly, browsing, and enjoying the reproductions. Some of the colour is off a bit, some examples are very clear with good colour, being able to see some of the brush strokes if your so inclined to the study of illumination. A good buy for the price.

Although the introduction is well worth reading, this book is more about high quality reproductions of stunning images from one of the highly decorated illuminated manuscripts. It may not have a huge number of images, but the quality and complexity is such that I highly recommend this book for people who want to stare at something extraordinarily beautiful.

I feel very proud to have it. I use it to show-off with my friends who are dying of envy! Extraordinary edition. Love it.
