## Description

"I cannot recommend this book highly enough." — Fr. Mike Schmitz "Few writers have shaped my understanding of the spiritual life as deeply as Romano Guardini. In Learning the Virtues , he shows that virtue is not merely about becoming 'better behaved,' but about becoming more fully human, more free, and more capable of receiving and responding to God. Guardini's insight into the human heart is extraordinary, and his work has deeply formed the way I think about virtue, discipleship, and holiness." Fr. Mike Schmitz Host, The Bible in a Year podcast There is more to goodness than simply keeping the rules—you must cultivate virtue. While avoiding sin keeps you on the path, actively practicing virtue is what transforms your soul, deepens your daily walk with God, and allows you to experience true Christian freedom. In this spiritual classic, the renowned Msgr. Romano Guardini—praised by Pope Benedict XVI as a master of divine and human truth—guides you step-by-step through the core virtues that form a holy life. With profound psychological depth and pastoral wisdom, Guardini reveals how virtue is not an abstract obligation, but a vibrant, daily habit that makes you fully alive in Christ. Inside, you will discover actionable spiritual insights to transform your daily life, including: The Battle Against Envy: How to identify and root out this subtle sin, even when it hides in spiritually mature souls. The Spiritual Value of Courtesy: Why good manners and respect are vital to the health and salvation of your soul. Truth Beyond Pilate’s Question: The surprising answer to "What is truth?" and how living it transforms your mind. Patience as a Prerequisite: Why moral growth is impossible without patience—and how the strong cultivate it. The Danger of Spiritual Disorder: Why orderliness isn't just a habit, but a protection for your spiritual wellbeing. A Holy Sense of Humor: Why joy and lightheartedness are essential tools for maintaining spiritual strength. Justice vs. Tyranny: Why modern justice movements often fail, and how true, God-centered justice preserves society. Silence as Spiritual Balm: How modern noise weakens the soul, and practical steps to reclaim interior peace. Asceticism in Daily Life: Why self-denial isn't just for monks, but a necessary path for every Christian's salvation. Whether you are looking to revitalize your personal prayer time, break free from routine spiritual exhaustion, or build an enduring foundation of Christian character, Learning the Virtues provides the timeless guidance you need to grow in holiness every single day. Review: Great meditation on virtue - This is a beautiful book. Romano Guardini was an important theologian prior to the second Vatican Council, but he also wrote wonderful books of practical theology. This is such a book. He explores many virtues including my favorites: courage, reverence and gratitude. He defines them, explains them, and references them to our relationship to God and God's relationship to us. Some of his reflections are quite profound; all of his reflections are beautifully written. Fr. Guardini was an important influence on Joseph Ratzinger. Sometimes as I was reading this book, I could hear Joseph Ratzinger as well. This is a good book to pray with and with which to examine one's conscience. If you don't know Romano Guardini - this is a great way to be introduced.
Review: Favorite book - I studied this book in college. I love to go back to it, choosing a virtue to meditate on each week. I've given it as a gift several times. It is something you could read over and over and always find something new. Guardini very simply breaks down each virtue, what it looks like on a human level, and how it reaches for God. He often discusses virtues that are overlooked. Great read. Would highly recommend for anyone looking to further their spiritual lives or understanding.

I decided to get this book after hearing father Mike Schmitz on my Hallow app give it his top rating. Many sections of the book are highlighted for when I return. If you feel like you have lose ends in your spiritual thinking, then consider this book. And remember, "sin is no joke."
