Review: Great device when paired with the August Connect module for HomeKit integration! - I have installed several Yale Assure deadbolts as well as HomeKit enabled smart locks from other brands, and this is by far my favorite! The black finish is very sleek and it matches our matte black hardware quite well. For those who want to control this with a Smartphone, the Connected by August Kit is required for HomeKit integration. Alternatively, you can purchase the Yale Assure Lock SL with August Connect which simply is these same two components placed into a larger box, and with a $80-90 higher price tag. Installation of this lock requires you to completely remove and replace the existing deadbolt. This is typically done with a phillips screwdriver, and is a very simple 2 minute operation. Once that is removed, the Yale Assure tapered deadbolt latch is installed in the door and the deadbolt mounted around it. After installing so many of these, it takes me less than 2 minutes to do these steps as well. It includes the required four AA batteries, and I suggest replacing them with lithium ion batteries when they expire. The next part can require some extra work, depending on how well aligned your deadbolt is with respect to the latch for the handleset in addition to how well the door seals when it is closed. I suggest attempting to lock the deadbolt with the existing deadbolt strike plate to see how things work before making any changes. I have found that I often have to adjust the handleset strike plate so that it latches with the door squeezed tighter against the seal - this typically requires a chisel to physically relocate the handleset strike plate. Once that is done, install the new deadbolt strike plate such that there is no interference with the deadbolt latch. This step is important, as if the deadbolt rubs against the strike plate it will at best wear your battery prematurely and at worst get jammed. Once that is complete, you can sit back and enjoy the beauty and simplicity that is the Yale Assure Lock SL. I really like that this lock does not have a keyed access. There are quite a few options that you can set on this device, such as volume (including off) and one-touch lock which simply requires you to touch the keypad with your hand to lock the deadbolt - such a timesaver when heading out! I installed the Connected by August module ( sold separately ) and that allows me to control this from my iPhone directly from the August iOS app as well as with HomeKit. From the August app, I set up geofencing, so it unlocks when I return home. From HomeKit, I use “Hey Siri” from my iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock the deadbolt. I should note, I also have an August Wi-Fi Smart Lock, 4th Generation , and I MUCH prefer this Yale lock over that. The Yale Assure Lock SL simply works better (more reliable WiFi) and has the ability for me to unlock with the keypad.
Review: Works well with Homekit iM1 module - This YRD-256 is my second Yale lock. Previously I owned a YRD–240 with a Z-Wave module for six years. It was sturdy and reliable without any issues (to this very day it works great) and it paired well with SmartThings. Since then I’ve become a convert to HomeKit for several reasons I won’t go into here. While this one doesn’t use the new Apple HomeKey feature, I’ve come to trust Yale locks and the price point was easy to swallow. This was a logical upgrade for me as it slides right into HomeKit. For this upgrade, I purchased the iM1 module separately and received my lock from desertcart in one day. Installation was easy although it was similar to my last lock. HomeKit setup was, of course, pleasantly simple and fast, even for a HomeKit appliance. After connecting, HomeKit suggested three scenes and three automations. I turned on all but one. The Yale app tracks my family’s PIN codes and keeps a log of use. Sadly it does not allow a temporary code or an auto expire feature. Man, this would be a great feature. But otherwise, it is elegant and reliably functional using the Yale app, HomeKit, or Siri. If it holds up as well as my last Yale lock I am going to be very pleased with the value of this purchase.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is it finger print resistant?**
A: The idea that fingerprints would give away your passcode isn't very realistic anyway. Unless you did 1111 or 1234 or something stupid like that, there would be so many possibilities even if you repeated some numbers. For instance if you used 40044004, and a would be burglar saw that you only touched the 4 and the 0, with 8 digits derived from 2 digits that's 256 possible combinations, and that's if the person knows you used all 8 digits, but he wouldn't. With a 7 digit code still using two numbers that would yield 128 possible combinations, and so on all the way down to a 4 digit code which to be fair would only leave 16 combinations IF you only used 2 numerals for your 4 digit code, for example 4004. Long story short, if you use a short 4 digit passcode you should use 4 different numerals (ie.8642), or if you use a long 8 digit code you could basically use 2 or 3 numerals and still have a unguessable passcode (ie 40044004). Statistically it's not as easy to figure out a passcode as you might think even if you know which numerals are used, unless you pick a profoundly stupid passcode (ie 4321, 1234, 4444)

**Q: Will this work with a Arlo security system?**
A: I don't think so. These specific locks don't connect to the internet or work with apps. Yale has a similar lock with internet capabilities.

**Q: Does this keep a record of whose code opened the door and when?**
A: Yes it will, but you have to install the Yale Access Upgrade Kit. This module/bridge kit will give you the access to view who used the lock last. You can set up individual entry codes for each person in your home, and it maps it that way really well. An additional cost, but worth it.

**Q: I have 2 house doors to lock (front & back). Can you use the same yale assure key that works 2 yale assure locks?**
A: If you are asking if the YRD226 can be re-keyed, the answer is yes. Simply bring the locks to a locksmith prior to installation and ask them to key them alike. They can even match these to an existing Schlage key if you would like. Alternatively, you can order a replacement tumbler from Yale and get it keyed to whatever you want.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works well with Homekit iM1 module

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 3rd Purchase of this Same Lock
*by D***R on February 7, 2026*

These locks are reasonably priced and very easy to use. I had them professionally installed, so no comment there, but I've got them on 2 houses now and it makes life so much easier! I can just give people the code and I don't have to worry about losing house keys or giving them to guests. I have a DIFFERENT combo lock on my primary residence and it's much too complicated and as a result it's really difficult to use correctly and I'm the only person in my household who can actually use it. That's why I love the Yale Assure Deadbolt. Highly recommended.
