Excellent Zeitgeist to be Had
I lived in Akron at the tail end of the scene described in this book, and the artist / author does an amazingly good job of capturing the feel of the time. The Crypt, the Dale, the Bank, the occasional odd house parties and shows, spread across an increasingly permanent industrial recession, with that pervasive smell of rubber and spent industrial fuel; the Clash at the Civic Theater in 1983 was the end of the line for this era, and the graphic novel does a nice bookend through his geek-rock protagonist in encapsulating the sense of what it was to be young and without a well-limned future at the time.

The Baron has arrived!
This graphic novel takes place in Akron in 1979 and 1980. The lead character is Otto, a dorky eccentric teen who calls himself "The Baron". He gets involved in the punk rock scene and manages to become a hero to local punks. Several real life punk legends appear in the comic, as they perform at the club Otto works at and have misadventures with him. This is a hilarious and at time poignant book that really captures the feel of what punk was like at the time.

DERF tells a story
Being from Cleveland, I grew up reading Derf's excellent strip The City, and immediately fell in love with his mastery of cartoon composition combined with biting satire. I am a big fan of his book My Friend Dahmer (which I read before this), but while that book was designed more as a ruminative character study, Punk Rock and Trailer Parks is strong, assured story, with a clear beginning, middle and end. Absolutely essential for fans of Punk Rock, local history, and anyone who has emptied a trombone spit valve in an act of justified revenge.

this book became one that I was so excited to finish as i reached the last thirty pages. So much interesting, life changing things happen to Otto and we can all relate to them in one way or another.

Super fun
This dude is just a lovable character. I guess that's not too punk rock to say...but he is.

Punk Rock and Trailer Parks
I first discovered Derf when I read his self published 24 page 'My Friend Dahmer' comic, which details the author's true life teenage friendship with famed serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, he has since released a much longer and complete version of MFD, and I bought that, read it and loved it. Eager for more Derf, I picked up this number, and while equally good, it couldn't be more different, MFD is a tragic story of a lonely young man's decent into madness and murder, PR & TP is a raucous, rude and hilarious punk rock time capsule, again dealing with real life events and people. This time telling the story of the rise and fall of The Bank, a Punk club in Derf's home state of Ohio, (The rubber city, Akron to be precise) A star studded comic with the real life bands and people that played and visited there making cameos along the way. I wasn't alive in 1978, I didn't grow up during the rise and fall of punk, when this story takes place, but this comic made me feel like there's a little bit of punk rock even in me.
