Give 'em Hell, Malone [DVD]

Good movie for Thomas Jane fans, pretty similar to Sin city

As far as tough, well-made neo-noirs go, "Give 'Em Hell, Malone" isn't perfect; it has a clunky, uneven plot with terrible pacing problems, and a meandering storyline. It has unlikely characters, over-the-top violence and about as much emotional depth as a brick wall.What it does have, however, is undeniable and unequivocal heart: it's raw and it's dirty. It has a longing homage to the '50s films that inspired it that it should at least be given a watch by most people. I'll be the first to tell you it's no masterpiece, but I won't be last to tell you that, as a trashy piece of noir entertainment, it succeeds on almost every level. It's action-packed, it's humorous and it's never, ever touching, but it will completely entertain you for its whole running time...and, after all, isn't that what we see films for?

It's a bit silly and not everything I remembered it being but it's worth a watch if this sort of thing is your sort of thing.

Thomas Jane is awesome in this movie and plays his part really well, the movie has a brilliant story with Jane playing a tough as nails gun for hire who gets set up in a deep trail of revenge, its very original and very cool in the way its filmed with some stylish action and very bloody shootouts, especially the awesome open sequence which is probably the best scene in the film. There are some cool villains too, Ving Rhames is great as always. The movie is very Dick Tracy in its style sometimes, a brilliant gangster film thats certainly worth checking out. Great cast and great style and very entertaining for a small film release.

Malone is a classic scotch guzzling gumshoe. He narrates during the movie in the tough guy Sam Spade style. Early in the movie he is shot and goes to a retirement home to meet his mom, a Betty White knock-off, who nonchalantly removes the bullet from his chest. He meets a dame, who is every bit as tough talking as he is. One of the guys who is trying to kill him is a pyromaniac named Matchstick, who learned to act from watching Heath Ledger as the Joker. If fact he imitated the Joker so much, it was a bit annoying.Ving Rhames is a bad guy attempting to deal with emotional issues. The plot is confused and immaterial to the movie. There is also a stereo-typical oriental female killer, who is tough. How tough? Ving asks, "Do you know where she keeps her knives?"The comedy is light but good. Simulated oral sex, very brief nudity, and drops the MF bomb.

a film noir homage, not too bad at al. Competent direction from Russell Mulcahy, and whilst Thomas Jane can do this sort of role in his sleep, he seemed to be having fun. Reasonable supporting cast.

Nur eben in jeder Hinsicht auf die Spitze getrieben, aber das so gekonnt, das die Balance zwischen Lakonie, Brutalität, Melancholie und subtil-knisternder Erotik perfekt gewahrt wird.Die Schießereien sind schlichtweg atemberaubend und kommen immer im rechten Moment, die Figuren brauchen hier keine Tiefe, sondern erfüllen zum Schmunzeln schön die erwartbaren Klischees (Femme fatale, hartgesottener Detektiv, brutale Gangster, psychopathische Killer, usw.), die Optik ist so gelungen, dass man fast aus jeder Szene Standfotos festhalten möchte; das Fahrzeug von Malone - mein Gott, wo haben sie das bloß hergeholt? Es ist einfach göttlch wuchtig, voll Vierzgerjahre und wird ordentlich reißerisch in Szene gesetzt.Die Macher schafften es auch, eine gehörige Dosis Humor in Figuren und Handlung zu packen: z.B. die mehrmals Bulletts aus dem missratenen Sohn - Malone - herausoperierende Mutter im Altenheim, oder eine Totenshow in einem Theater, von der durchgeknallten Killerin als künstlerische Performance inszeniert.Bilder, Musik, Stimmung, Spannung, Schockelemente, alles zusammen ergibt ein nonstop unterhaltsames Kinojuwel, dem man die liebevolle Kleinstarbeit in Gestaltung und Abstimmung aller kreativen Anteile ansieht. Leider, leider gibt es zu all diesem Aufwand kein einziges Extra.Ich empfehle übrigens dringend den Originalton. Streetslang, bildhafte Ausdrücke, Spracheigenheiten, wie soll das denn im Deutschen rübergebracht werden?

Big Low-Budgie has everything and enough 30-40s and recent lifts from all that is Neo-Noir. From Alan Ladd with his cat, to his Mom, Dames and an Asian Bad Girl; there is a full spectrum of devices that work with the design, story and lack of abandon. Great cast, pre-odd production values, iconic director and an incredible sense of fun.BD is great with pic and sound. Sets are well designed. Trash for most.

Bonjour, étant un grand fan de ce que l'on peut appeler les films noirs, je me suis penché avec attention sur le synopsis du film. J'y découvre avec plaisir que le héros est interprété par Tom Jane. Ayant bien aimé les interprétations précédentes de cet acteur, je me laisse tenter et commande donc ce dvd.Un seul mot me vient à l'esprit après avoir visionné cette chose : ATROCE!Une ambiance ratée, des méchants caricaturaux, un doublage à la limite du ridicule. Le héros étant affublé d'une voix d'adolescent post pubère, bref une honte cinématographique dans lequel l'acteur principal se demande sans doute pourquoi il a accepté d'y participer. Un rappel des impots sans doute?Amateur de polar noir, passez votre chemin.

We really enjoyed this film, it has an old & new feel about it, like 1940s detective dialog ect.. and yet modern, a fun film with story, weird charactures... Donnie Yens ( martail artist) sister is in this film, she is a vilian, great fun performance
