A single-use special purpose tool that's actually worth buying
If your bike maintenance skill level ends with basic chain cleaning and you rely completely on a professional mechanic, you obviously won't need tools and this is not applicable. If you've begun to do your own maintenance then you know this means accumulating various bicycle-oriented tools that go beyond screwdrivers, wrenches and home tool kit stuff. Some of those tools are obvious purchases that support a wide range of uses, such as a good set of hex keys/allen wrenches, chain breaker tool, etc.. Others are questionable investments because they're very narrow purpose/infrequently used--truing stand? derailleur hanger bracket alignment gauge? Not for the typical cyclist with a couple bikes and riding only a few times a week.In my opinion, this is one of those rare tools that even though I may only need it 1-2 times a year and I could easily do without it and let my bike shop do the work, I think it's worth the purchase to own. For whatever reason, the market leader in bicycle drive trains (Shimano) has chosen as a standard securing the left side crank arm to the shaft using two very strong/secure bolts that use common hex keys and a cheap plastic threaded cap that uses a very uncommon jumbo-sized T/star pattern and is flush mounted so you cannot grip its head--you cannot remove the crank arm without a tool to fit. Now this MAY be included in whatever entry level starter "tool kit" you've purchased for bike maintenance, but that likely is nothing more than a plastic wheel/disk that fits the cap and you have to grip/turn that by hand. If the cap is stubborn, this may be difficult. This tool is a vast improvement over those basic disks--there's a handle-like piece that's much easier to grip, and for exceptionally tough jobs you can slip a crescent wrench over it for leverage. There's an even better option available from Park Tool--a nice metal hand wrench that also has a common size hex option to add leverage--but that's about double the price of this. For a pro that removes cranks frequently, the Park's the better pick, but for the home repair mechanic, this is a great product, and I'm now able to easily remove my crank, clean the shaft and BB interior, and reinstall the crank in a matter of minutes.

Works on Shimano Hollowtech II crank arms
Its a plastic tool for setting the non-drive side crank arm. The tool is a hard plastic, there are metal versions but the nut being torqued in plastic as well and it would be easy to over torque and possibly strip the plastic threads. It works.

Tool works well (wrench required to turn it)
This tool turned the dust cover right out. Perhaps it could have larger thumb levers because it does require the use of a wrench or pliers to grab it awkwardly.
