Review: Calming Agent for the Neurotic Christian Mind - I know there are many, many reasons to recommend this classic commentary, reasons that are likely missed by me because I don't have much theological experience or, frankly, interest. But I might bring something useful to these reviews anyway, because the book does something for me I haven't seen mentioned. When I read the bible, I obsessively run my mind to the hardest sayings, the most torturing difficulties, the bits that make God, and even God in human form, I mean Jesus, look cruel or doubtful or impossible to know. Like the OCD teenager who only sees the three or four parts of her face in the mirror that make her, she is sure, very ugly, I come away from bible readings an emotional mess, always sure to find something to be hurt by, skipping over what is good and bright about God and the faith as something that might be true, but well, I already knew that, so get to the part that hurts again. To this, the Mattew Henry Commentary is quite a salve for me, and I can't help thinking it might be for someone else. It doesn't soothe those obsessions away by trying to answer the hard questions (though there is some of that), nor by avoiding them, but rather by being so very practical, so meditative on the main, most instructive parts of the text that I can't help paying closer attention to those "plain" parts of the bible I used to skip over as "understood, but not that interesting." It does this in mainly two ways: 1. by interesting me in the ordinary historical facts of the text, presenting me with images that allow the meanings of the bible to haunt my imagination, and 2. by its devotional, but calm tone, the calm writing voice of Matthew Henry himself, who hardly ever seems to have an axe to grind. His humility and practicality disarm my over-sensitive feelings and allow me to stay on task, so to speak. Even with as little theological knowledge as I have, there are things in Henry I disagree with. However, that's all swallowed up in the rest of the experience the book invites me to. And who could be comfortable agreeing with a book this large on everything? If the struggle described in this review resonates with you, try this commentary. Read the Gospel of John, just a bit at the time, and read Henry's take on each passage. There's a decent chance you will face the bible with a calmer mind. Not because Henry brings false comfort or soft soap, but because he makes you look so long and quietly at each part that your obsessive impulses can't easily race ahead to something to be hurt about.
