Review: Perfect in Windows 7, 8, and 10 with no driver hassle. Quality multipurpose controller for PC and Rasberry Pi RetroPie - I already use the standard wireless 360 controllers with the official MS wireless USB receiver. Which also works great with Windows 7, 8.1, and 10. As well as android devices and Linux such as the Rasberry Pi Distros and the RetroPie 3.x project. So I wanted to get my kids controllers as well but didn't want to have to buy 2 USB receivers AND 2 more wireless controllers dedicated to them as that would drive up the cost a lot. So I bought 2 of these for their individual Windows 10 laptops. Works great. Also tested them with my Raspberry Pi 2 using RetroPie 3.0. Tested with Windows 7 and 8.1 on other desktops and laptops that I have before upgrading them to Windows 10. Just works great. Pros: - Excellent quality controller that console players will be at home with. I prefer the PS3 Dual Shock over the Xbox 360/One and PS4. But the PS3 and PS4 controllers are not excellent plug and play like these. No messing with drivers for Windows. - Wired keeps the cost down without having to purchase a USB receiver. - USB cable has a quick break-away section that can potentially save your USB port from getting damaged if the cord is pulled during gaming. I may test that on an old system one day. Cons: - Wired. But if that is a deal breaker, the wireless setup is also excellent! Just cost more in total. - USB plug, the hard plastic portion, is really long. Which can lead to a lot of stress on the USB port as the weight of the cable is further out from the port. I don't see this as a huge issue. But just keep it in your mind if you plan to leave it plugged in all the time. i am able to adapt just fine between the Playstation and Xbox style of controllers, and just about any controller. So it more important for me to get a controller for my non-consoles that has excellent compatibility. And automatic support in Windows. I also like how many PC games recognize the 360 controller and have the controller overlays in the game. So if the game shows buttons to press, it actually matches the 360 controller.
Review: So perfect it's hard to write a review of it! - The controller and the included Windows software to enable it arrived in retail packaging which was, for a change, easy to open and deal with! I followed the clear and conspicuous instructions to install the software before plugging in the controller, then plugged it in. There were no additional steps required, although I waited a minute or two to see if I would get "Restart required" or any other prompts, but I didn't. (Note- I'm running Windows 7 64-bit on this PC. You may or may not get different prompts with XP or Windows 8.) I launched a game (Tomb Raider 2013), and was pleased to see that the game instantly recognized this controller. All of the in-game prompts that had previously said "Press E" or other keys had now changed to indicate the controller's buttons and triggers in place of the previous keyboard prompts. The button prompts were even color-coded to match the color of the buttons on the controller (blue for X, yellow for Y, etc.) I just don't see how there could be any tighter integration of the controller into a game. It was, simply, perfect in every way. The joysticks and D-pad work smoothly and predictably, as is typical of the genuine Microsoft Xbox 360 controllers. No, I'm not a Microsoft fanboy, but there is no denying the quality and performance of all the Xbox 360 controllers I have used over the past 5 years or so. I also used 2 controllers from other manufacturers with my Xbox 360, and they both failed within a year or two... while all of my genuine MS controllers, all over 4 years old and including two wireless ones, still work to this day. TLDR: Top quality construction and performance, software included, straight-forward and trouble-free installation, perfect in-game results. I would give it 6 stars if that were possible.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How much Dorito dust will this hold until it is non-functional?**
A: The more Dorito dust you cake onto this thing, especially around the analog sticks, the better you will become at Call of Duty. Also you should rinse it off with room temperature, flat Mountain Dew, but only the Gamer Fuel variety.

**Q: i need the reciever for play in pc?**
A: Just ordered "Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows & Xbox 360 Console" directly from Amazon. It came with a USB receiver and two AA Duracells. If the item's name possesses the words "for Windows" it comes with a receiver, otherwise it does not.I don't know if this is the case for certain individuals in this instance, but Amazon themselves have been known to possess a mixture of counterfeit stock for certain items (e.g. Micro SDHC cards)If you ordered one with this label directly from Amazon and a receiver didn't come with it and/or the packaging looks different from the customer pictures that have a usb receiver + batteries + manual etc. (Red box with grey plastic packaging on the inside) then issue a refund or replacement from Amazon. In relation to the original question, yes a receiver is required to use this controller wirelessly with a PC.

**Q: does it work with steam games?**
A: It does NOT work or work well with DirectInput (older, legacy, pre-2006) games, only works with XInput games. Before 2006, all PC games used DirectInput API standard for game controllers. Then in 2005, Microsoft implemented the XInput API for Xbox 360, and Windows had to follow and adopted the new Xbox 360 standard. However, the transition process for Windows has been long and gradual: some Windows games from 2013 still used DirectInput, (e.g., BioShock Infinite.) The Xbox 360 controllers do NOT have built-in functionality to work with games that use DirectInput. Sometimes the controllers may work but poorly: the controls are erratic, only partially functional, and/or either too sensitive or insensitive.I found out about the DirectInput vs. XInput problem only after I had tried to use an Xbox 360 Controller to play BioWare's Jade Empire: Special Edition, which was released in 2007 on the PC. Jade Empire used DirectInput. The controller worked only partially: the left joystick (that controls movement) was moving by itself so my game character could not stand still; the right joystick (that controls camera view) and D-pad (for abilities) were non-functional. I went online to look for solutions, and learned about the different DirectInput and XInput API standards. That was when I found a long list of PC games, mostly older titles, that do NOT work or work well with the Xbox 360 controller. The solutions I found were either very technical and difficult to implement, and/or was an additional cost, (e.g., buying a gamepad emulation or profiler app, which usually costs around $10; none of the free ones work well -- I tried;) and/or was inconvenient to use, (e.g., every time I reloaded Jade Empire, I had to unplug and replug in the controller connection for a gamepad profiler to continue to work.) They are just hassles. The problem with Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller for Windows, which none of the other reviewers/fanboys has even bothered to mention, is that it does NOT have a built-in function to work with DirectInput. It may work, but it certainly does not work well or perfectly. The Logitech F310, for example, has a physical switch behind between "D" (DirectInput) and "X" (XInput) methods. The switch should stay on "X" most of the time. However, if you ever run into a DirectInput game, you just switch over to "D". The Microsoft Xbox 360 Controller does NOT have that switch. Microsoft wants developers and users to conform: everyone should stop using DirectInput and adopt XInput, so Microsoft would tell you to "just don't play that game" instead of giving users a real solution. (That's that answer other people got when they called Microsoft to try to get a solution for the DirectInput problem.)If you know you will definitely NEVER touch an old, pre-2006 game that works better with a gamepad or run into one of the odd new games that still uses the old API standard, then this controller may work for you. However, if you do run into a game that uses DirectInput, it will be a lot of frustration and hassle.

**Q: How long is the cord?**
A: The package says "9ft/2.7m" but I haven't measured this myself. I will say that I compared the cable to a genuine Microsoft Xbox 360 controller I purchased from Radioshack a few years ago and the cord is at least a foot shorter than what I know to be the norm. The technical data sheet at Microsoft's own website lists the length at just under 10 ft. which seems to match the controller I owned before but not this controller. As a side note, my controllers (2) did not have break-away which Microsoft's website says that they should. Here's the Microsoft page where I found the length: https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-us/products/gaming/xbox-360-controller-for-windows/52a-00004#techspecs-connect

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Perfect for my Windows 7 laptop! Plug-&-play, works great!
*by D***A on January 9, 2012*

I bought this controller because I needed something that was truely plug and play. It works flawlessly on my Windows 7 Professional 64 bit laptop. I chose the "For Windows" version of the XBOX 360 controller simply because I didn't want to take a chance with other controllers not being recognized or working incorrectly. I don't have an XBOX 360 and wanted this specifically for my Windows computer. It is a perfect match! This controller is recognized immediately by Windows which installs the drivers automatically. If you want you can also go to the Microsoft website and download the latest software/drivers too. The controller itself works as described with no problems whatsoever. I am using this controller along with another XBOX 360 controller to play multiplayer games on a Nintendo 64 emulator (Project 64) on my PC. Assigning the buttons is easy, but the rumble does not work without installing a plugin (not the controllers fault, just letting you know). I don't mind not having rumble at the moment as it does not affect game play and will install the necessary rumble plugin some day. This controller also works with many other PC games. I highly recommend a Microsoft controller over a third-party controller! The quality is worth the money. I also recommend going with this USB wired controller over a wireless version so you don't have to bother with batteries or charging. Its simply plug and play and I can't really ask for more than that. Great controller for Windows computers, buy this one!
