Gatewood bugnet insert
This insert fits perfectly inside the SMD Gatewood Cape. It works well, fit and finish are excellent, zippers are well marked and easy to get to, and it's pretty easy to connect to the Cape stakes, and the top hook lines up with the ring in the Cape like it should. Mine did NOT have the pullout tabs that enable you to take the slack out of the head/foot ends.IF you are 5'-10" or shorter, and IF your sleeping mat is not thicker than 2", you will have enough head/foot room. If you are at the limits, make sure you get the version with the pullouts, or, as I did, make some yourself and sew them in by machine or hand. If you're taller or have a thicker pad, you might end up touching the net at points and getting bitten by something. The bathtub floor is silnylon and pretty light (that's kinda the point), but if you're an ultralight camper, you probably already know this and use your equipment appropriately. I personally use a piece of tyvek or polycro underneath as added protection. If you have not already used the Gatewood Cape system, be aware that it's not luxuriously roomy, like 1 person in a 2-person tent. It is designed to cover one person and their gear, and it does that really well. There is even room under the Cape (without the bug net in use) to cook on a small stove IF you are very careful. But that is all. If you are claustrophobic, or roll around a lot in your sleep, it will likely not work for you without some mitigating techniques (like laying a thick fallen branch on either side of you, under your groundcloth, to keep you in place.)
