The rubber grip is 4-1/4 inches long. The exposed part of the shank is only 1 inch long. The proportions of the hammer in the photo are those of a standard 16-ounce carpenter's hammer.This hammer will be fine for the purpose for which I bought it -- to have something very small and light to keep in my desk drawer for very light-duty tapping. Judging from the way the head is pinned to the handle, I wouldn't dare try to use it for driving a nail. I'm sure the head would come off pretty quickly.
