A classic inspirational movie.
I have not seen this movie for a long time and it has been lost over the years but is one that stuck in mind as being exceptional quality in message and performance from Morgan Freeman, who probably should have won an Oscar but that was then. He would today I'm sure. It is apparently a real story of Eastside High and released in 1989. If this was true it was a dire situation. In the early intro based in 1967 which introduces "Joe Clark" as a gifted teacher there is a very inspiring speech by Joe on racism, which Donald Trump should hear. Fast forward to 1989 Eastside deteriorates into chaos, with hoodlums and drug dealers invading a 90% African-American student body. Bad Joe is sent in to clean it up and achieve 75% on a state wide test of competency. At 33%, Joe has an impossible job dumped on him and virtually no support from the municipality. He immediately takes control, but he is far too tough, a complete dictator. He displays his passion for learning and empathy by giving the hopeless teenagers a reason to believe in themselves. It is a very riveting movie, one of the very best in the dedication to education for children left behind. He fights everyone even Robert Guillame his boss and the Mayor of the community who plays politics with the children and a witch who tries to run JOe out of the school. One of the negative reviews speaks of alternative issues which are in play, but the movie is very real in dealing with the situation in spite of the "who's responsible." The movie is all about Joe Clark and the children's survival and how he gives them hope, not at all about how the school got there. So that criticism is totally off the point, that is not what the movie deals with at all.I think this is one of my favourite inspirational movies. It is unfortunate it is not in the mainstream any longer.
