Make-Your-Own Makgeolli Kit, Korean Home Brew Kit

This was my first time making makgeolli. The directions were easy to follow and it ended up tasting great. My mom said it tastes more like the makgeolli she had growing up. I ordered a couple of refill packages, which unfortunately got lost in the mail. When I contacted them, Stephen promptly shipped me a replacement and even sent me an extra one with a hand written note. I definitely recommend.

Clear directions, quality items in the kit and, so far, everything went according to expectations.I'm an experienced home brewer and have tasted makgeolli a couple of times, including once in Korea, so I wanted to try making my own.This kit makes a "micro" sized batch--about 1 liter before dilution, 1.5 liters when ready to drink. But it is plenty big enough to experiment and try several servings of this authentic craft beverage. Also the makers of the kit offer a free refill of ingredients for making a second batch if you want to try making it with fruit or another variation.My only advice is to heed the suggestion to use a non-stick pot when cooking the rice--it is VERY sticky once cooked.As expected, it is a bit tangy when finished--like a tart green apple. I'm going to acquire some artificial sweetener to soften that tartness a bit as many of the commercial examples do.

We enjoyed everything about the kit. The box it arrived in was well organized and a piece of art in and of itself. The directions were witty and easy to follow. It was so successful we ordered a refill, which came promptly and well packed. Out hats are off (and our cups are out) to the fine folks at hyesyunhouse!

Pretty simple and straightforward DIY kit. Would recommend placing a plate or pan under the jar for the first night because there will be a bit of overflow when the fermentation begins. Was inspired by the recipes and made a batch with rose petals and cardamom (add it when bottling along with some sugar) which turned out pretty good.

I've made makgeolli once before using a different recipe but was pleased to come across a kit to make the whole process easier. I love the packaging design and branding and also love that the company shines a light on and helps the mental health issues in Korea.The kit comes with everything you need to make makgeolli except water and something to cook the rice in: Glass jar, chapssal (sweet glutinous rice), nuruk (Korean fermentation starter), yeast, no-rinse sanitizing solution, collapsible funnel, filter bag, and instructions. I followed the directions and used a rice cooker to steam the rice. Everything is prepackaged and labeled, so it's so simple to put together. Just rinse/soak the rice, cook and cool it, put it all in the jar with the nuruk, yeast, water and stir. Leave the lid unscrewed a little to let the gas escape. After stirring for a few days and letting it sit, strain, add water and sugar if desired, and enjoy!I've been recommending this set to my friends who like makgeolli or like to brew. The kit came well packaged with easy to follow directions. I enjoyed making the batch and am excited to try the final product. I have made a few other homebrews for beer and seltzer and really enjoyed this as a micro brew because it was not as time consuming or as involved of a process. I would recommend this for anyone who is interested in homebrewing or making makgeolli regardless of experience.
