Best film in a long time
Honestly, I had this one my watchlist for weeks and kept saying, "Nah, someother time." I thought it would be a cheesy film. Then I noticed it was written by Fogelman (This is Us, Life Itself). I laughed, cried, was completely drawn into the characters. For once, I wasn't seeing Al Pacino playing Danny Collins. I saw Danny Collins, the character. Whole family film for say 15-16 and older.

Funny - and powerful - character study
This is a fantastic movie, and I can't believe I have never heard mention of it. The story is so much bigger than that of a burned-out, aging rock star. It scales to the life choices we make, the loved ones we neglect, the pressures we bow to, and the temptations we indulge. For most of us these are small defeats and compromises; for Danny Collins they are technicolor and nearly catastrophic. At several turns the story looks headed for a big downer, but each time self-reflection, effort, and lots of humor redeem both the immediate course of events and the larger message. A++++

For some reason John Lennon's brilliant & timeless music felt more profound than ever before
Kudos to the entire cast, the story-line, dialog & etc.,etc.! For some reason John Lennon's brilliant & timeless music felt more profound than ever before, like it was given new life, it was fresh & crystal clear. Also, it was piped in with precision timing & never felt like his music was being exploited. While I haven't read or heard anything about this flick, I realized at the end that the real Danny Collins was Irish /English therefore I suspect some may take issue w/ a completely Americanized depiction. Perhaps there's a British version, I'll check. Anyway, I was so thrilled to find (by happy accident) this most enjoyable little gem! There seems to be an endless sea of unappealing & more often than not, disappointing movies & tv shows, one grows quite weary at the very prospect of sieving through. That said, to finally find some quality viewing was a delightful and rewarding surprise! A final added note; I've never personally been a big Pacino fan but I have to say I'm impressed w/ his willingness to do his own vocals which were about as pitiful as my own. It took guts & a humility I truly felt he did not possess as well as true professionalism!

If you're looking for a character driven film that is well written, acted and directed, i recommend Danny Collins.
I hadn't expected to like this movie as much as I do. I would recommend it to any adult who likes character driven stories. Al Pacino is excellent in the title role and the supporting cast is brilliant. I appreciate the fact that the story was inspired by an actual event. I liked everything about this film. It achieved a level of believability and authenticity rare for the genre. It isn't a comedy, not a drama or a romance. it's a little bit all of those, and very much like real life. If you are looking for a film that is well written, acted and directed, a film you will enjoy investing a couple of hours into watching, I recommend Danny Collins. Caution: There is graphic drug abuse in the film.

Writing Makes This Movie
Al Pacino is in top form as a maturing rock star who has lost his mojo and is running on empty. An event laboriously described elsewhere causes him to pause and rethink a few things about his life.He also has a personal issue to deal with, which helps the ying/yang balance story telling style. Cliched but it is very engaging and this movie is truely worth your time invested. Writing's great,so is the acting. Go for it.

Hey, baby doll, I loved this movie!
Extraordinarily breathtaking Acting! Wonderful, touching plot! Loved it to the bits and pieces. And, I watched it again. And again. And ...again. I just finished watching it for the 8th time. This movie has become a member of my family, this is how I feel. The harmony, the touching exchange between the characters is absolutely exceptional! Each and every one of them contributed immensely to this jewel. I cried each and every time, I laughed and sang this silly song for days in a row after watching the movie. I even caught the very smart bit (bravo, Al!) with Olivia Pacino. What a great dad you are! My fave scene: oh, it's so hard to pick one, but here you go: the "tennis match" between Danny and Mary, which I call it "The Pattern". The second fave one is the end. Bob Cannavale is captivating! Jennifer Garner -- you are such a talented actress! and you also are angelical beautiful ! Katarina Cas, is doing an excellent job, I fell in love with her talent (because I didn't see her before in any movies), my fave part: where she props her fingers (hands) on her hand to express a situation (no spoiler here). And those cute and with a perfect smile teenagers, the kids at the hotel --- so charismatic! Excellent, excellent cast!, thank you, Mindy Marin !!! Exceptional movie! I love Pacino even more -- if that's even remotely possible. I love you, Al, thanks for your movies! May you live forever!!!

Excellent movie, even if Pacino is not the guy I would have pictured in this lead.
Very enjoyable movie. Great story line and, of course, superb acting from Pacino as we all expect. The only problem was pointed out by another reviewer. I just couldn't buy Pacino as an aging rock star. He's just not a music sort of guy, as he demonstrated. His few stage scenes in this movie show him with awkward stage presence not to mention the totally unrealistic handling of the microphone. And he should not have sang...at all. I might have been able to get into the character more if someone else had sung the lines in some manner that I could believe flowed from an aging man who was at one time a presumptively excellent vocalist (since he was rich and successful, but nowadays I don't suppose that necessarily follows). Anyway...Danny was totally endearing nevertheless, and I found all the acting to be excellent. Even the little girl was over the top. Cudos to the cast. Great flick.

Great Heart Tugging Film With A Story Line That Is Outstanding
My Wife was not sure about this one at the start. She said we can watch it for 10-15 minutes and turn something else on if it isn't any good. Five minutes in and she (and I) were hooked. What a GREAT story, yes, maybe loosely based on real life, but one that if it does not tug at your heart, then I am not sure what type of film will. The film is not just about an aging rock star, it is so much more. All the actors give outstanding performances and Al Pacino provides one of his best performances in a human interest story.Definitely recommended and one that I could watch a 2nd time which is something I do not often do.

Thoroughly enjoyed this film. Pacino is at his late-period best here, relaxed and effortlessly entertaining. The film is a touch on the long side and misses some opportunities for black humour. But good it is. And very very different from the last Pacino film I saw, which was Manglehorn. That was pretty unmissable since it had Harmony Korine and Pacino in it. I was lucky enough to meet Korine once, but I'd pass on the opportunity of meeting Al Pacino. It would be too cool to process.

Lovely Sweet and Sour Tale
Great film. Al Pacino does what he says on the tin as the ageing rock star, rather more complex then he first appears, having a shot at redemption.Annette Benning and Christopher Plummer are splendid, with nice understatement against Pacino's enjoyable scene chewing. Younger cast also excellent. The tale is sweet with a little sour in there, accompanied by some great John Lennon tracks. Why not 5 - well perhaps Mr P's efforts on the musical front aren't quite believable - but a minor complaint.Be warned there is some short full frontal nudity early on.

A funny and touching story
This is a delightful movie- it is both funny and touching. Pacino plays a crooner who one day sees that he has thrown away his musical talent for success. He tries to reconnect with his abandoned family. There is romantic angle with the wonderful Annette Benning. In this locked down times this movie will gladden your heart.

Alright but nothing special.
Thought I was onto a winner with Al Pacino but really just an average movie to fill an hour or two. My 27 year old son did enjoy it though and my husband thought it was alright so I guess it has some appeal that transcends gender or age.
