If tits snug/tight but at the same time it is not difficult to open it. Once you open it you can take it off completely just as you said, like the round Dutch cookie cans. The can is made of very good quality sturdy metal that is not flimsy or easily bent. Easily made shipment to my home without any dents or kinks. It is beautifully painted and it does look exactly like in the picture but.. in person it gives the aura of Italy's eternal greatness. Just magical. It is a classic that I always buy for my family and as a gift. It is HUGE gorgeous can. It is about 8 inches high and just about the size of the shorter side of the printer paper page .. just to give you an idea. I love to use the can for storage once the cookies are gone. The cookies are neatly wrapped in parchment type paper making a nice presentation. But sadly I didn't care much for the flavor even though I love almond flavoring these seemed a bit strong and left an aftertaste. I believe it's one of those things you have to have an acquired taste for growing up with.
