How long are the straps please? My square bannister measurws 45cm all round.

It will fit. My bannister measures 48cm all round and is square and it fits. There wasn’t a lot of slack left on the cords though so it was tricky to pull them tight - I ended up having to grip each end with a pair of pliers and use those to pull them tight as there wasn’t enough slack left to get a solid hold with fingers alone. But i got it on, it is rock solid, and I didn’t have to drill into our 120 year old staircase!!

How wide is this, how much narrower will it make the opening for the stairgate?

It will narrow the opening by about 23mm in total. You have the wood which is 20mm but also a metal bracket that tucks behind the wood to pull and hold the straps tight. That adds 2-3mm.

Would this work on a round metal railing as thick as a coke can?

I think so. My bannister has a much larger wooden rail.
