Vintage Hand Lettering: Create Beautiful Fonts with Old Time Flourish

An incredible work of art and reference book on the art of lettering
The media could not be loaded. Let me just say a thank-you to Lisa Quine the author of this book!!! I have always had the desire to learn how to write in different fonts, well...my sister is a graphic designer, I know that the term is typography but I'm not sure if it's considered a font if you write it out by hand. Whatever the case I have invested in lettering/calligraphy books because it has always been a desire of mine to create different styles of letters. So far, I have a nice collection of books started, however my favorite book so far is this one. When looking through this book I knew I had hit the jackpot, all of the styles were definitely vintage/ old school. The problem with a lot of the other books is a lot of the styles seem so similar, but with this one I don't think any two are exactly the same or very similar. It's also just a work of art, every letter is proportional and it looks like it was done by computer but the author shows you step by step how to draw the different styles. Unfortunately done other authors did very similar variations of the same style which is frustrating because I like variety, who doesn't? I will say that I own one lettering book by Jay Roeder which has a lot of good information and advice, however his styles aren't as varied as I would like. Another thing is that since of these authors/artists mention lettering in the title, however it's really a book on calligraphy which is a little more technique on the way you actually write and you need more of a specific type of writing apparatus. But to get back to this book it has ten different styles, which isn't as many as I would like, however, like I said before I feel like there's enough differences between each style that it pays off in the long run and once again she walks you through the whole process, with pictures. I'm not sure how well these books would go off without pictures but this one has plenty to show you the way! In addition to owning these books I have also printed the alphabet in different font styles and then I use tracing paper and fill in where the font of the letter is. It's not quite as effective as seeing the literal breakdown of every step to creating these works of art, however you start to see patterns in the letter, so it's not a bad way of at least starting to understand how to draw. I feel like there are many ways you can learn this process but seeing the break down is my favorite. The biggest takeaway is that at least with lettering you can pretty much go as fast or as slow as you want when you are actually drawing whereas calligraphy you have to press down with the pen at certain points and position the pen in such a way. Calligraphy and Lettering are not exactly the same. I know that this isn't the most thorough review but I hope it helps. I'm going to try to load some images but if you don't see any, just trust me this book is worth the money!!! Okay it looks like I was able to load a video, it's a little wonky but I tried to show you from beginning to end how you can develop one of the styles of lettering shown in the book. Hope this helps!

Get this one FIRST!!
I ordered this book along with another “lettering manual”. This book , this book is great!! It gets straight to the bizniz. While each book has its value I really love this one because it actually teaches you how to letter, very quickly. I am glad I bought both. One is more technical then the other, both phenomenal values. This book has all the vintage lettering styles that I wanted to learn, while that other book teaches the technicalities to make them my own. Do not hesitate. If your looking to learn different lettering styles THIS IS IT!!!!!! I was eyeballing this book until it was finally released. I want to thank the author for doing this. I am glad I bought it.

Easy, beautiful, recommended
Such an easy explanation of how to hand letter. I did a quote in my art journal in her “old money” font, and it was so easy to understand and execute. Would recommend this for anyone who wants to think outside the normal hand lettering box.

Great reference to draw letters and explore lettering design...
It is a very good book, with many references and alphabets, clear explanations and easy to follow. It includes some composition aspects and encourages the exploration of different alternatives for the elaboration of a design mixing fonts, ornaments and decorative elements. The presentation of the edition has a nice and good quality format.
