Lovely to look at, but set aside money for the eventual repairs
8 year old watch, dead as a flounder. Will likely cost $1500 to repair and in these days require a month to get the final estimate and then who knows how long to repair.Tried to wind it one morning after it sat a few days and it started running backward. This is the second Rolex that I have had to have repaired -- the other one had to be repaired twice -- for the same issue.

they really are beautiful pieces of engineering
(This is not a review on the pros and cons of owning an expensive watch. This is a review on the actual watch). You really have to own a Rolex to fully appreciate it. As far as watches go, they really are beautiful pieces of engineering, and this model is no exception. The 904L stainless steel used is lustrous to look at and to hold. The watch sits very comfortably on the wrist. The oyster case back keeps the lugs up off the skin, and adds to the comfortable feel. The band uses all solid links, and the clasp is extremely well engineered - easy to use and solid and secure. The dial in this version, the white, is very easy to read. The lume functions extremely well, and glows all night. The 24 hour hand is used as a reference hand, and the 12 hour hand is changed according to the time zone you are in. The date is also changed by adjusting the 12 hour hand. Like all Rolex in-house movements, you can adjust this watch forwards or backwards at any time of day without fear of damaging the mechanical movement. The screw down crown ensures the watch is waterproof to 100 metres. The movement is also COSC certified, giving it fantastic accuracy for a mechanical watch. Rolex also cuts their sapphire crystals at a 45 degree angle which gives incredible clarity and scratch resistance. One of my favourite things about this watch is that it is not flashy at all. Most people would not even realise it is a Rolex. If you only wear a Rolex for the bling factor, this watch is not for you. But if you are a lover of incredibly engineered watches, and want a hard wearing watch that will outlast you, have a good look at the Rolex Explorer II.

37 years and still going strong.
In 1984 when the Explorer Ii was first introduced my wife bought me one at Harrods of London. I’ve worn and loved this fine watch since then. It has been trouble free since new and has always been trouble free. I love this fine watch. It an old true friend.
