The Knight and the Dragon (Paperstar Book) Review: Lovely art and story - Having enjoyed Strega Nona, I wanted to check out other books by Tomie DePaola. This is a winner. There are some pages without words that are inviting for kids to narrate on their own. The overall theme is about the similarities and differences between people, assumptions we make, and how to get along. There is a fun twist at the end, and a librarian is the hero of the story. Charming illustrations, too. Review: Great illustrations helps kids understand the story - I knew dePaola from my childhood (Strega Nona) but have never read this book. I bought it for my daughter (nearly 3) who loves being read to and then just looking at books. Typically after a few read through or two she'll take a book off by herself and flip through, narrating the story (as she remembers it) as she goes. This book is fantastic for that reason as the pictures are well-done, very endearing, and tell the story as well as the words do.

Such a cute story!!!!!
We LOVE this book! We received it damaged as it was shoved into the back of my mailbox and the spine was all messed up, but Amazon came through and sent a replacement. We have had this book for 2 days and I have read it at least 5x already! My son loves flipping through the pages and telling me the story as well. It's just a lot of fun! Even my 9 year old thought it was cute the first 2 times.

Get Started, and Then Make Up Your Own Narrative
This isn't a read-to, but is sort of a read-with, and actually is a look-at-it-and-make-it-up-as-you-go-along. The author helps us get started by establishing a knight who has never fought a dragon and a dragon who has never fought a knight. He tells us that they plan to have a joust, and sends them both to the library to read up on knight-dragon fighting. From there on, for the remaining 24 pages, apart from a few "meanwhiles" we have to supply all of the words and figure out and decide what's happening. And that works great. There are a number of books coming out recently that consist of illustrations that are open to interpretation, on pages that are formatted for a kid to actually write in his own story. This book doesn't go that far. But, there's lots of room to create different versions of the story every time you go through this book, and it presents a wonderful opportunity for a creative reading and imagining session. There are lots of little jokes and bits around the edges of the illustrations, so you could also have fun just pointing out those to each other. You know, after a long day I don't know if I'd pick this as the bed-time book. But, if your little reader is in the mood and if you're in the mood, and if there's just a bit of silliness in the air, this book could be a lot of fun.

Great book
Very cute book. My son loves knights and dragons. Like Mike the knight, so this book was cool to have because we read every night before bedtime. Reading is better than tv any day. The pictures are very descriptive so some pages don't have many words the picture tells the story it's self. Very cool to explain to my son he can tell what books are saying by looking at the pictures. He now wants to read them to me. He is also doing in many other books and wanting to read them to me. It's very sweet and cool. So yeah, love it. Cute story about a dualing knight and dragon with a happy ending

Most charming story and engaging illustrations! Will order more as gifts.
I was disappointed when I first read the book as there is little text. However, after going through it several times, I am truly delighted with it and can't wait to read it with my grandson. The illustrations are too clever and charming for words, perfect for engaging a child in the story and in some elementary medieval culture. I am going to order another copy or two for friends who have grandchildren .... or children.

Unexpected; New bedtime favorite! fantastic book which encourages imagination in children
I cannot believe how much my son LOVED this book from the very first time we read it. I was surprised to find many of the pictures do not have words with them. But it turns out, that may have been why this book was such a hit with my 3 year old. For all the pages w/o words I would sort of make up my own, pointing at the pictures and describing what was happening. Soon my 3 year old would join in and help me describe those scenes, we sort of built our own story to go along with the illustrations and it was like we were reading together... This allowed me to engage with him while reading, while also encouraging participation and creativity... Which he definitely responded to right away. In fact, I would hear him playing with his toys and reciting some of this book and the parts we "made up" to himself. So great!!! Def a new bedtime favorite.

I bought a used version of this book but you just cannot tell. It’s in perfect condition. The story is cute too. Very little text and lots to point out in the pictures.

Gave this to my granddaughter, who recently turned 6. She's been fascinated by knights and dragons, etc., as in Harry Potter stories, which she still needs help to read. This book has charming illustrations, and she was excited to read it by herself!
