My buns are pretty rigid and i'm afraid they will crack, is there some sort of ointment i can apply to the bread?

The edges and the sharp tip were designed to cut the bun when you rotate it like a drill. We did several tests with hard buns and the best way is to spin the hotdogger while pressing it smoothly towards the middle. The more you spin it, the better the edges will cut the bun and drill the hole. You may go forth and back taking the crums out, so you can better check the integrity of the bun interior. You can achieve a perfect drilled hole in a hard bun, however there is the chance to crack it when you bit. If you need more tips, you may get at hotdogger@unacreation.com. Let us know if it works.

What's the deal with this thing?

So, this is a good idea. And when you use it once, you are like, "ah that was a cool idea!" But then then you realize that you have to go thru a whole pack of Deli style rolls for everyone. It is not that it is a lot of work, but it does take some time to reem out a roll. Also, you have to pay attention to the length of the gadget vs your bread. The point of it will go thru the far end and it will ruin the whole idea of it reducing the mess.
Aside from that, you HAVE to use Deli rolls. Because they have to be big enough to reem out the middle but still have enough bread to hold meats and condiments and such. This ends up being A LOT of bread for just a hot dog.
It is not a terrible gadget or a terrible pain to use. And it works good once you get the hang of it. And yes, there may or may not be R-rated thoughts as you use it for the first time or two lol.

Is this to be used on very large buns

It does not need to be very large buns. Standard buns or rolls which are not very small should work. You just need to drill it right. Note the size of the bun used in the video compared to the size of the hand.

Question 4

There are two drillers in the order. Is each a different size? Seems it by the picture.Would make sense to have a larger one for brats.

Hello, both have the same size, length and width. For brats you can use the spikes closer to the handle to widen the whole.
