Golden Age Illustrations of W. Heath Robinson (Dover Fine Art, History of Art)

This is an excellent and relatively inexpensive book if you are a fan of the illustartion from this period and enjoy the works of illustrators like Rackham

This book contains more than 100 of this artist's Art Nouveau-inspired illustrations. However, in my opinion, Mr. Robinson was NOT a genius with color--he WAS with black and white. So if you realize that you will get 64 marvelous black ink pictures, and to MY way of thinking only 33 nice color pictures, then this is the book for you. It is enough for me because I LOVE his black ink pictures!!! It has 122 pages with pictures on them--some are smaller in groups on one page. I consider it to have been worth the money. I just expected his use of color to be more like Edmund Dulac.

Our daughter enjoyed the inspirational illustrations in this book.

ウィリアム・ヒース・ロビンソンは日本ではあまり知られていない画家の一人だと思います。 私は海野弘さんのハリー・クラーク画集で知りました。 ロビンソン三兄弟（みんな画家）の末っ子です。 本書には１９世紀末から１９２１年までの彼の絵が収められています。 そのため彼の人生の後半に描かれた絵は収録されていません。 本書に何を求めるかによってこの本に対する評価は異なると思いますが、私は前半期に描かれたものが見たかったので、満足です。 目次を見ますと、有名な文学作品への挿絵が多いことに気付きます。 シェイクスピア、ラブレー、チョーサーのほか、ペローやアンデンルセン、ポーの名前もありました。 カラーよりも白黒の方が多めです。 個人的にはラブレー作品への挿絵はとても綺麗とは言いにくく、むしろ非常に醜いものが多く感じられました。 これはロビンソンがどうのと言うよりも、作品自体の性質によるものと思います。 これを入れるくらいなら、もっと美しい絵がいくらでもあるのですから、そちらを収録してくれれば良かったのにと思いました。 一方で、「真夏の夜の夢」の細やかな自然描写はとても見ごたえがありました。 画風はラッカムとデュラックを足して二で割ったようなものでしょうか。 「挿絵の黄金時代」の画家に興味のある方でしたら、買ってみて損はないと思います。

Lovely book, worth the money

This is an awesome edition. the illustrations are so beautiful. It is a truly beautiful book to have. A must have for any library.

Initially bought this book as a present I loved the illustrations so much I decided to keep it! Excellent value for money.
