I located two buried valves 250' away from the irrigation controller. I used one lead to the colored zone wire and the other lead to an 8' ground rod. I set the transmitter to send tone. I then walked the yard with the receive unit touching it to the ground. I had to use headphones. Basically I used the receive unit like a wand. I tried before without headphones. I tried before with the chatter only. (Neither worked for me) I never thought to use the receive unit in the yard tracking wire like a wand. I found both valves first try. Use brand new batteries.

This is probably my 4th one. I use them almost daily and have been known to loose them, I’ve never worn one out or had it quit working. They are fantastic for diagnosing systems or even locating long lost valves. When I’m out in the field trying to figure out which wire runs what, just clip this on and fire it up. It’s well worth the money!

I like the cost for what this little gadget will do. Saves a lot of time.

Ordered May 2023- As of January 18,2024 Machine is now dead. Yes, batteries have been changed and still no go...... Worked fine, then all of the sudden one day, it quit working properly.... Changed batteries and still not working, changed batteries again (just in case) and still... Yep you guessed it, not working. No seller info on Amazon to email the seller about this. So, it gets a subpar review. I expect something to last a little longer than 7 months when it's very well taken care of.

Good tool

This is absolutely worth every cent. My sprinkler system would not run after the winter break. I had no idea whether it was the controller, valves or wiring and troubleshooting was an arduous task. I could not locate two of the valves but found the common and control wires leading up to it. Using this device I could test signal and voltage coming from the controller. You can also activate valves without having to find them. I found several issues from damaged common to faulty control colored wires. The chatter function was not that useful as I could not distinguish between valve and sprinkler head sounds. In the end this tester saved me a lot of money having to get a professional to come out. I spent a Saturday morning diagnosing the problems and fixing it. Also the needles in the crocodile clips helped so that you can access the inner wire without cutting the plastic outer off.

I looked at the spec's, no mention that no batteries were included! Cheap! For the price there should be batteries included. Poor judgement on the suppliers part.Update, after checking the tester on a scope I see the signals it outputs and they should do the job. But testing on a 28 years old Neison valves the "chatter" noise is so low that it is hard to hear right at the valves. Suspect if the valves are buried in a box with the cover on, it could not be detected. Probably valve type dependent. Worth a try.
