It's a Micro SD card. Since mine is a little older now, it's an 8 GB.

Can a child use this?

Yes, not sure what age you are referring to but if the child is too young an adult could certainly setup the mask to record and then let the child swim around with it, but I would say that all but the youngest of children would do very well with it.
