Easier To Use For Tight Fitting Door
My RV door was hard to open with the standard vertical pull latch that rotates to the left. The door shuts tight due to compressing the weather stripping and I had adjusted the strike plate as far as it would go. With the standard latch I can only get a couple of fingers behind the pull and then only to my fingers first joint. My wife had an even harder time opening the door. This latch solves the problem as I can get all of my fingers behind the pull and to the second joint or more. Still takes a firm grasp and pull to open but much easier to do. My only complaint has to do with the installation. The screws were not long enough to contact and "bite" the female threaded posts. I finally pushed both sides of the latch hard enough to compress the foam door core and the new latch's outside gasket just enough to get the threads to bite on the 2 screws closest to the door edge. Not easy to do. In order to get the other 2 screws to bite I had to firmly tighten the first two to compress the foam core even more. Longer screws should be provided or if the short ones are needed for thinner doors so the screws don't bottom out, then 2 sets of screws should be included. Another minor issues is, since this latch is wider, my hand rail when folded against the door for travel rests against the new latch and probably would scratch the paint off from hitting the latch and vibrating when traveling. I solved this by placing a thin stick on vinyl bumper on the latch where it hits the railing. Even though this latch doesn't have a separate deadbolt like the original, I feel it is secure. RV doors swing out so they have a lip to prevent something like using a credit card to open the throw and the throw won't retract anyway when locked so it acts like a traditional deadbolt. Overall a good latch.
