Review
"First-time author Dillemuth's encouraging tone and Wood's easygoing cartoons emphasize Lucy's capability and independence, even in a frightening situation, and appended materials and activities invite readers to consider their own neighborhood surroundings."--Publisher's Weekly "Highly recommended."--Midwest Book Review
From the Inside Flap
Lucy in the City is about a young raccoon who gets separated from her family one night and has to find her way home. Faced with the challenge of being on her own, Lucy tunes in to her surroundings for the first time and discovers that she can re-trace her steps using smells, sights, and sounds. At its heart, the story focuses on developing spatial thinking, understanding the world around us, and using concepts of space for problem-solving. Includes a "Note to Parents and Caregivers."

Great book
This has quickly become one of my daughter's (4 years old) favorites. In the book, the raccoon Lucy has to find her way home with the help of an owl. The illustrations of the story from Lucy's view point are interspersed with illustrations from the owl's viewpoint (maps of the city with directions showing the next steps Lucy should follow). These maps from the owl's perspective are my daughter's favorite part. She loves to look at them and predict what the owl is going to say. As a science educator, I am also aware of the importance of children developing spatial reasoning for later success in STEM topics. So it's an added bonus that this book naturally engages kids in thinking about directions, maps, and that your location changes what you can see.

My 4.5-year-old son, "I don't like it. I LOVE it!"
After we got this book I asked my 4.5 son if he liked it. He told me "I don't like it. I LOVE it." I asked him why and he told me "Because Lucy got lost but then owl helped her find her way home. And she got home right at her bedtime." As a parent I like it because it's a great jumping off point to talk to children about maps, the 5 senses, and the importance of listening (so they don't get lost in the first place!). Also, the illustrations are great! Highly recommended.

Too basic and short.
The description made it sound like it helps kids consider tuning in to their environment. I felt like all Lucy did was ask an owl to find the way for her. Overly simplistic for my kinder and 2nd grader

This is a unique and fantastic book. I highly recommend it both for the home library and the classroom. My kids like it so much we donated a copy to my daughter's 3rd grade class. The teacher liked a fresh way to teach about maps, and was pleased to be able to use the activities in the back of the book. My son who is in Kindergarten is naturally good with directions, and this is one of his favorite books. I think it is just the right length, and the illustrations are cute too.

Grandson loved this book!
This was given as a gift to my grandson, who lives out of state. His mom reported that they have read it every night, as it has become his new favorite.

Wonderfully entertaining and educational
I bought this book after reading an article on NPR about early STEM education. My son is only 6 months old, so he's not the intended target. But, I love reading it to him. The illustration is very vivid and it makes for an enjoyable time for us. I look forward to when he gets older and is truly able to grasp some of the logical thinking aspects of the book.

Fun, interactive story!
My 3 and 4 year old love this book, and often request it at bedtime. Not only is the story fun and interactive (my kids love to follow the dotted lines with their fingers), but they also look forward to the activities at the end.

The story introduces children to spacial thinking with a fun and captivating story
Lucy in the city is a book that keeps on giving. My 5 year old son loves it and so do we. The story introduces children to spacial thinking with a fun and captivating story, and the games (or exercises) at the end of the book are great. Some books you read together once and that's it. This one you will read many many times together. Highly recommend.

A nightly favorite!
Three weeks after the book delivery and my 4-year-old daughter is still requesting this book every night. This says a lot for how engaging this book is. This only happens for one out of five books that I buy/borrow for my daughter. And it's an extra bonus that she is learning her directions as the same time!
