Vogue® Knitting Vintage Collection: Classic Knits from the 1930s-1960s

If you love classic, easy and clear instructions, this is a book for you
Vogue Knitting has been around forever, or nearly so. When I was learning to knit, my own great aunt taught me the stuff beyond the basics using Vogue Knitting Magazine patterns. I used Vogue Knitting to teach myself also, and am forever grateful for their clarity and beautifully written instructions. Vogue has published several books, and the instructions are just clear, and easy for a novice to use even when selecting designs that might, on first glance, appear beyond one's skill. The results will be wonderful. The vintage patterns here might need some adjusting for modern fit, but overall there is nearly nothing to do except follow the pattern and be pleasantly amazed at your results. That said, taking care and taking time to do it right is all that's needed to get a really professional result. Where a pattern calls for a wool yarn, or alpaca or cotton or even blends of them, try to use something with a similar blend to get the look shown in the illustrations. Using wildly different fiber combinations will still get a wonderful garment, but won't look much like the photographs.I got this book because I needed a pattern for gloves and another for argyle socks. Both needed to be easy to follow. Vogue delivers. Instructions even include the number of stitches to have on each needle when knitting socks and gloves in the round. It's been decades since I've tried gloves or socks and I know the outcome in advance. The charts for the argyles is perfectly balanced. The gloves will also be easy to do, as every contingency has been anticipated by the authors. There are also patterns for mohair sweaters, a couple of coats, and several timeless cardigans included, and by adjusting lengths a bit, will be great presents. Very few of the designs really need much adjusting for modern taste, so long as fit and ease are considered in size selection. I know this because a few sweaters I knit decades ago are now right back in style. Mom was right. Hang on long enough and everything that went around before is back in style again. Eventually. The substitutions recommended for yarns where the original yarn is no longer made are given with weight, yardage, and complete information that allows the knitter to find yarns that truly substitute without needing much adjustment for the difference. Lengths can also be easily adjusted painlessly, so long as enough yarn is purchased in the first place. Overall, this is a good resource book, and information on fit is complete and accurate. Even if you're not knitting a project, but doing something with similar stitches or construction, you can easily use this wonderful book as a how-to guide. If you're designing your own, the completeness of information for every project will help with any design the knitter creates, even if only one aspect of a design is used.I purchased this book because my first copy disappeared in a move. The thieves just lifted a couple of boxes of books, and I do hope they either learned to knit or were totally frustrated by their 'haul." Somehow though, I doubt the thieves will be showing off their hand knit creations around town. Needless to say, I'm keeping this copy in a very safe place.

Good quality in photos.
Clear and precise instructions. Easy to follow designs. Material recommended not easy found in today’s stores. Do prefer men ‘s designs to women's.

A classic turtleneck
This collection is really vintage. I plan to attempt the front cover pattern because it is a classic turtleneck, but less likely to do any of the others. They are beautiful but not my style. However, if you are into retro, this is a good book for your library.

Vogue knitting vintage collection.
Best family sock pattern from the fifties . Sock has wide ribbing all the way down the foot and sock stays in place when you wear it. Sock also keeps its shape. Book has several great patterns. Worth the price of the book just for the sock pattern. Pattern is sized for kids, women and men.

Good, With One Little Caveat
I really like this book, but I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because, surprisingly, several of the patterns can actually be found in other Vogue books (e.g., the silk lined shawl, men's cashmere gloves). The repeat was a bit disconcerting, and I would have rather seen something else, since I have almost the complete Vogue Knitting library. However, the book has many, many excellent points, which make it a worthwhile purchase, even if you've seen a few of the patterns before. First, Vintage Collection is designed very well, with all of VKs usual features and inspiring photographs. Patterns are grouped by type: women, men, kids, and scarves/shawls. Unlike VK's Vintage Knits On the Go, the Collection contains patterns that truly speak for their era and will lend a vintage touch to everyone's wardrobe. The variety of designs is astounding, including a coat, an aran sweater, the gorgeous cashmere cabled sweater on the cover, sweet baby things, as well as a silk lined shawl... and many, many more.

Me gustó mucho.

Vogue Knitting
I actually bought this by mistake, hoping that there would be a particular pattern I was looking for. However, the patterns look great as usual with Vogue, so I kept it.
